"What is urgent is the evangelization of a world that not only does not know the basic aspects of Christian dogma, but in great part has lost even the memory of the cultural elements of Christianity."

Office of the Passion

Office of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ

composed by Saint Francis of Assisi

For those who have a special devotion to the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, especially those who find imagery helpful to prayer, as well as for those who find an ordinary Office of the Hours too long, the "Office of the Passion" composed by Saint Francis of Assisi is ideal. Much loved by Saint Francis and his brothers, this Office was prayed by Saint Clare, Saint Colette, and many Franciscans down through the ages. You will find it easy to enter into the spirit of this office. Saint Francis intended it be accessible to all, Religious and lay alike.

It is a composite of various texts from the psalms with additional lines uniquely from Saint Francis.

The following antiphon is prayed to Mary at the beginning of every hour of the Passion:

The Antiphon

Holy Virgin Mary,
of all women on earth
there is none like you;
you are the daughter and handmaid
of the Most High King and Father in Heaven; you are the Mother of Our Most Holy Lord Jesus Christ; you are Bride of the Holy Spirit.
Pray for us,
with Saint Michael the Archangel
and all the powers of Heaven
and all the Saints,
to your Most Holy Beloved Son,
Our Lord and Master. Amen.

Matins (throughout the year, Lent & Holy Week)

Lord my God I call for help by day,
I cry at night before you.
Let my prayer come into your presence,
O turn your ear to my cry.
Come close to my soul and redeem me;
Ransom me pressed by my foes.

Yes, it was you who took me from my mother’s womb,
Entrusted me to my mother’s breast.
To you I was committed from my birth,
From my mothers womb you have been my God.
Do not leave me alone in my distress;
Come, close, there is none else to help.

You know how they taunt and deride me;
My oppressors are always before you.
Taunts have broken my heart;
I have reached the end of my strength.
I looked in vain for compassion,
For consolers; not one could I find.

The proud have risen against me;
Ruthless men seek my life.
To you they pay no heed.
I am reckoned as one in the tomb;
I have reached the end of my strength,
Like one alone among the dead.

You are my Most Holy Father;
My king and my God.
Make haste and come to my help,
O Lord, my God, my Saviour,
The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost,
One God forever. Amen

Let us praise the Lord our God
living and true:
to Him be all praise,
all glory,
all honour, all blessing
and every good. Amen

Morning Prayer (Throughout the year, Lent & Holy Week)

Have mercy on me, God have mercy,
For in you my soul has taken refuge.
In the shadows of your wings I take refuge
Till the storms of destruction pass by

I call to my most high, holy Father,
To God, who has always been my help.
May He send from heaven and save me
And shame those who assail me.

He snatched me from my powerful foe
From my enemies whose strength I could not match.
They laid a snare for my steps,
My soul was bowed down.
They dug a pit in my path
But fell in it themselves.

My heart is ready, O God,
My heart is ready;
I will sing, I will sing your praise.
Awake, my soul,
Awake, lyre and harp,
I will awake the dawn.

I will thank you, Lord, among the peoples,
Praise you among the nations.
For your love reaches to the heavens
And your truth is in the skies.
O God, arise above the heavens;
May your glory shine on earth.

Let us praise the Lord our God
living and true:
to Him be all praise,
all glory,
all honour, all blessing
and every good. Amen

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be
World without end. Amen

Terce (Throughout the year, Lent and Holy Week)

Have mercy on me, men crush me;
They fight me all day long and oppress me.
My foes crush me all day long,
For many fight proudly against me.

My enemies whisper together against me;
They all weigh up the evil which is on me.
Those who watch me take counsel together,
They come to visit me and speak empty words.

All who see me deride me,
They curl their lips, they toss their heads.
But I am a worm and no man,
The butt of men laughing stock of the people.

In the face of all my foes
I am a reproach,
An object of scorn to my neighbours
And of fear to my friends.

Holy Father do not leave me alone;
My strength, make haste to help me.
Make haste and come to my help,
O lord, my God, my Saviour.

Let us praise the Lord our God
living and true:
to Him be all praise,
all glory,
all honour, all blessing
and every good. Amen

Give praise to the Father Almighty,
To his Son, Jesus Christ the Lord,
To the Holy Ghost who dwells in our hearts,
Both now and forever. Amen.

Sext (throughout the year, Lent and Holy Week)

With all my voice I cry to the Lord,
With all my voice I entreat the Lord.
I pour out my troubles before him;
I tell him all my distress,
While my spirit faints within me,
But you, O Lord, know my path.

On the way where I shall walk
They have hidden a snare to entrap me.
Look on my right hand and see:
There is no one who takes my part,
I have no means of escape,
Not one who cares for my soul.

It is for you that I suffer taunts,
That shame covers my face,
That I have become a stranger to my brethren,
An alien to my own mother’s children.
I burn with zeal for your house, holy Father,
And taunts against you fall on me.

Now that I am in trouble they gather,
They gather and mock me:
They take me by surprise and strike me
And tear me to pieces.

More numerous than the hairs on my head
Are those who hate me without cause.
Those who attack me with lies
Are too much for my strength.
How can I restore what I have never stolen?

Lying witnesses arise
And accuse me unjustly.
They repay me evil for good:
My soul is forlorn.
They repay me evil for good
And attack me for seeking what is right.

You are my most holy Father
My king and my God.
Make haste and come to my help,
O Lord, my God, my Saviour.

Let us praise the Lord our God
living and true:
to Him be all praise,
all glory,
all honour, all blessing
and every good. Amen

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be
World without end. Amen

None (throughout the year, Lent and Holy Week)

O all you who pass this way, look and see.
Is there any sorrow like the sorrow I bear?
Many dogs have surrounded me,
A band of the wicked beset me.

These people stare at me and gloat:
They divide my clothing among them,
They cast lost for my robe.
They tear holes in my hands and my feet;
I can count every one of my bones.

Against me they open wide their jaws,
Like lions rending and roaring.
Like water I am poured out,
Disjointed are all my bones.

For food they gave me poison:
In my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink;
They have laid me in the dust of death.
For they persecute the one whom you struck;
They increase the pain of him whom you wounded.

I lie down to rest and I sleep;
I wake, for my most holy Father
Has raised me in glory.

Holy Father, you will guide me by your counsel
And so you will lead me to glory.
What else have I in Heaven but you?
Apart from you I want nothing on earth.

Be still and know that I am God,
Supreme among the nations, supreme on the earth”

The Lord ransoms the souls of his servants
With his most precious blood.
Those who hide in him shall not be condemned.
With justice he will rule the world;
He will judge the people with his truth.

Let us praise the Lord our God
living and true:
to Him be all praise,
all glory,
all honour, all blessing
and every good. Amen

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be
World without end. Amen

Vespers (throughout the year, Lent and Holy Week)

All peoples clap your hands;
Cry to God with shouts of joy!
For the Lord, the most high, we must fear,
Great King over all the earth.

Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad,
Let the sea and all within it thunder praise.
Let the land and all it bears rejoice,
All the trees of the wood shout for joy.

O, sing to the Lord a new song,
Sing to the Lord all the earth.
The Lord is great and worthy of all praise, to be feared above all Gods.

Give the Lord, you families of peoples,
Give the Lord the glory of His Name.
Prepare your hearts and take up his holy Cross,
Live by his commandments to the last.

O earth, tremble before him;
Proclaim to the nations:” God is King”.

Let us praise the Lord our God
living and true:
to Him be all praise,
all glory,
all honour, all blessing
and every good. Amen

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be
World without end. Amen

Compline (throughout the year, Lent and Holy Week)

You have kept an account of my wanderings;
You have kept a record of my tears;
Are they not all written in your book?

My enemies whisper together against me,
Those who watch me take counsel together.
They repaid me evil for good,
Hatred for my love.
In return for my love they accuse me,
While I pray for them.

My holy Father,
King of Heaven and earth
Do not leave me alone in my distress;
Come close, there is none else to help.
Then my foes will be put to flight
On the day that I call to you.

My friends avoid me like a leper,
Those closest to me stand afar off.

You have taken away my friends
And made me hateful in their sight.
Imprisoned, I cannot escape;
Holy Father, be not far from me.

O God, make haste to come to my help,
O lord my God, my Saviour.

Let us praise the Lord our God
living and true:
to Him be all praise,
all glory,
all honour, all blessing
and every good. Amen

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be
World without end. Amen

Office of the Passion - Eastertide

Matins & Terce, Sext and None

Sing a new song to the Lord,
For he has worked wonders,
His right hand and his holy arm
Have consecrated his beloved Son.
The Lord has made known his salvation:

By night, I will sing to him, praise the God of my life.
This day was made by the Lord,
We rejoice and are glad.
Blessed in the name of the Lord is he who comes:
The Lord God is our light.

Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad;

He thunders his voice, his mighty voice;
Come, acknowledge the power of God.
His glory is over Israel; his might is in the skies.
God is to be feared in his holy place.

H

Who jeer at my lot.

Let there be rejoicing and gladness
For all who seek you.
Let them say forever, “ God is great”,
Who love your saving help.

My cry came to his ears.
O peoples, bless our God;
Let the voice of his praise resound.

May His Name be blessed in Him;
And endure like the sun.

Now and forever. Amen

Let us praise the Lord our God
living and true:
to Him be all praise,
all glory,
all honour, all blessing
and every good. Amen

Compline: Advent

How long O lord. Will you forget me?
How long will you hide your face?
How long must I bear grief in my soul
This sorrow in my heart day and night?
How long shall my enemy prevail?

Look at me, answer me, Lord my God!
Give light to my eyes lest I fall asleep in death,
Lest my enemy say: “ I have overcome him”;
Lest my foes rejoice to see my fall.

As for me, I trust in your merciful love.
Let my heart rejoice in your saving help;
Let me sing to the Lord for his goodness to me,
Singing psalms to the name of the Lord most high.

Let us praise the Lord our God
living and true:
to Him be all praise,
all glory,
all honour, all blessing
and every good. Amen

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be
World without end. Amen
.

All Hours: Christmastide

Ring out to God our Strength.
Shout in triumph to the true and living God with a loud voice.

For the Lord, the Most High, we must fear, great King over all the earth.
Our Most Holy Father of heaven,
our King before time was,
sent his beloved Son from on high
and he was born of the blessed and holy Virgin Mary.

He will say to me: "You are my Father",
and I will make him my first-born,
the highest of the kings of the earth.

By day the Lord will send
his loving kindness.
by night I will sing to Him,
praise the God of my life.
This day was made by the Lord
we rejoice and are glad.

To our race, this most holy and well-beloved son is given:
for our sakes, a child is born at the wayside and laid in a manger, because there was no room at the inn.

Glory to God in the highest
and on earth peace to men of good will.
Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad; Let the sea and all within it thunder praise.
Let the land and all it bears rejoice,
all the trees of the forest shout for joy.

Sing a new song to the Lord,
sing to the Lord, all the earth.
The Lord is great and worthy of all praise, high above all gods.

Give to the Lord you families of peoples,
give the Lord glory and power, give to the Lord the glory of his name,
Prepare your hearts and take up his cross; live by his holy commandments to the end.

Let us praise the Lord our God
living and true:
to Him be all praise,
all glory,
all honour, all blessing
and every good. Amen

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be
World without end. Amen
.

Prayer after the Office

Let every creature give unending praise, honour ,power and glory throughout all eternity to the Most Holy and Undivided Trinity, the crucified humanity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the chaste motherhood of Mary, the ever glorious and blessed Virgin, and to the entire assembly of Saints, and may we be granted forgiveness of all our sins. Amen.
