July
Feast
of Saint Thomas, Apostle,
who, when the other disciples were announcing that Jesus
had risen, did not believe, but, when Jesus himself offered
to him his pierced side, exclaimed: “My Lord and my God.”
It is handed down that he evangelized the peoples of India
concerning this faith.
2. At Laodicea
in Syria, the commemoration of Saint Anatolius, bishop,
who left behind admirable writings not only for religious
men but also for philosophers.
3. At Bizye
in Thrace, Saint Memnon, centurion, martyr, who,
in the time of Diocletian and Maximian, having been converted
to the faith by Saint Severus, was tortured with savage
torments together with him, and went up to heaven as the
first victor.
4. In Mysia,
the commemoration of Saints Marcus and Mocianus, martyrs,
who, because they refused to sacrifice to idols and rather
more fervently confessed Christ, were beheaded for Christ.
5. At Altinum
in Venetia, Saint Heliodorus, bishop, who, having
been trained under the direction of Saint Valerian of Aquileia,
was a companion of Saints Chromatius and Jerome, and was
the first to hold the episcopal seat of this city.
6. At Constantinople,
Saint Anatolius, bishop, who professed the orthodox
faith concerning the two natures of Christ as expressed
in the tome of Saint Leo the pope to Flavian, and took care
that it be professed in the Council of Chalcedon.
7. At Rome
near Saint Peter’s, Saint Leo the Second, pope, learned
in both the Greek and Latin languages, a friend to poverty
and to the poor, who undertook the Third Council of Constantinople.
8. At Toulouse
on the Garonne in France, Saint Raymond Gayrard,
who, a teacher of schools, after being bereft of
his wife, zealously devoted himself to works of charity
and founded a hospice, and then was admitted among the Canons
of the basilica of Saint Saturninus.
9. In the
city of Hung Yen in Tonkin, Saint Joseph Nguyễn Đình
Uyển, martyr, who, a catechist, died in prison
under the emperor Minh Mạng out of hatred for the Christian
faith.
10. In the
city of Vĩnh Long in Cochinchina, Saint Philip Phan Văn
Minh, priest and martyr, who, under the emperor Tự Đức,
endured beheading for Christ.
11. In the
town of Fuencarral near Madrid in Spain, blessed Maria
Anna Mogas Fontcuberta, virgin, who, for the instruction
of girls and the care of the poor and sick, founded the
Congregation of the Sisters of the Mother of the Divine
Shepherd.
12. In the
marsh near the village of Dongyangtai near Shenxian in the
province of Hebei in China, Saints Peter Zhao Mingzhen
and John the Baptist Zhao Mingxi, martyrs, who, being
brothers, during the persecution stirred up by adherents
of the “Yihetuan” sect, heedless of their own safety, while
protecting Christian women and children fleeing, were killed
by the enemies.

Saint
Elizabeth,
who,
queen of the
Portuguese, was admirable in reconciling the discords of
kings and in charity toward the poor, and who, after her
husband King Denis had died, embraced the religious life
among the nuns of the Third Order of Saint Clare in the
monastery of Estremoz in Portugal, founded by herself, where
she passed to God while attempting to reconcile her son
and son-in-law.

village of Vistiniacum in the region of Bourges in Aquitaine,
Saint Laurianus, martyr.
4. At Cahors
in Aquitaine, Saint Florentius, bishop, whom Saint
Paulinus of Nola praises as humble in heart, strong in grace,
and mild in speech.
5. At Langres,
likewise in Aquitaine, Saint Valentinus, priest and hermit.
6. At Blangy
in the district of Artois in France, Saint Bertha, abbess,
who entered the monastery founded by herself with her daughters
Gertrude and Deotila, and after several years enclosed herself
in a cell.
7. At Eressus
on the island of Lesbos, the passing of Saint Andrew
of Crete, bishop of Gortyna, who with prayers, hymns,
and chants sang praises to God with singular skill and exalted
the Virgin Mother of God as immaculate and assumed into
heaven.
8. At Augsburg
in Bavaria, Saint Ulrich, bishop, distinguished for
remarkable abstinence, generosity, and vigilance, who, after
fifty years in the episcopate, died in his ninetieth year.
9. In the
monastery of Hautecombe near Lake Bourget in Savoy, the
deposition of blessed Boniface, bishop, who, of royal
lineage, first hid himself among the Carthusians, then was
raised to the See of Belley, and finally to that of Canterbury,
and always devoted himself to the care of his flock.

in Etruria, blessed John of Vespignano.
11. At Dorchester
in England, the blessed martyrs John, surnamed Cornelius,
priest, recently admitted to the Society of Jesus,
Thomas Bosgrave, John Carey, and Patrick Salmon, laymen,
who aided that same priest; all together under Queen Elizabeth
the First glorified Christ by martyrdom.
12. At York
likewise in England, the blessed martyrs William Andleby,
priest, Henry Abbot, Thomas Warcop, and Edward Fulthorp,
laymen, who, in the same persecution, condemned to death
for their fidelity to the Church, together migrated to eternal
rewards through the suffering of the gibbet.
13. Among
the Hurons in Canadian territory, Saint Anthony Daniel,
priest of the Society of Jesus and martyr, who,
having completed the Mass, was standing at the doors of
the Oratory protecting the neophytes when enemies from the
heathen burst in; pierced with arrows and finally burned
with fire, he was killed. His memory is celebrated
with his companions on the nineteenth of October.
14. At Mauriac
on Mount Cantal in France, blessed Catherine Jarrige,
virgin, a member of the Third Order of Saint Dominic,
outstanding in aiding the poor and sick, who, during the
French Revolution, by every means defended priests from
seditious pursuers and visited those imprisoned.
15. In the
city of Hengyang in the Hunan Province of China, Saint
Caesidius Giacomantonio, priest of the Order of Friars
Minor and martyr, who, during the persecution carried
out by supporters of the “Yihetuan” faction, while trying
to protect the Most Holy Sacrament from a mob of soldiers,
was stoned and wrapped in a cloth soaked with petroleum
and died in the fire.
16. At Turin
in Italy, blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, who, as
a young man active in Catholic lay associations, devoted
his whole soul zealously to stirring up the Society and
exercising charity toward the poor and sick, until he was
struck down by sudden paralysis.
17. At the
extermination camp of Oświęcim or Auschwitz
near Krakow in Poland, blessed Joseph Kowalski, martyr,
who, during wartime, was imprisoned for Christ, where he
suffered torments and fulfilled martyrdom.

Anthony Mary Zaccaria, priest, who, for the reforming
of the morals of the faithful, established the Congregation
of Clerics Regular of Saint Paul, or the Barnabites,
and at Cremona in Lombardy migrated to the Savior.
2. At Rhegius
Julius in Calabria,, Saint Stephen of Nicea, bishop and
martyr.
3. At Cyrene
in Libya, Saint Cyprilla, martyr, who, it is narrated,
in the persecution of the emperor Diocletian, held for a
long time, burning coals with incense placed upon her hand,
lest by shaking off the coals she might seem to have offered
incense; then, most savagely mangled, adorned with her own
blood, she migrated to the Bridegroom.
4. Commemoration
of Saint Athanasius of Jerusalem, deacon of the Church
of the Holy Resurrection and martyr, who was slaughtered
by the heretical monk Theodosius because he had reproached
his impiety and had defended the holy Council of Chalcedon
against adversaries.

in England, the blessed martyrs George Nichols, Richard
Yaxley, priests, Thomas Belson, destined for the priesthood,
and Humphrey Pritchard, who, under the same queen, condemned
to death by beheading; some because they had entered England
as priests, others because they had helped them, underwent
the punishments of the gibbet.

the village of Huangeryin at Ningjinxian in the Hebei Province
of China, Saints Teresa Chen Jinxie and Rosa Chen Aixie,
virgins and martyrs, who, being sisters, in the persecution
waged by the followers of the “Yihetuan,” in order to preserve
the honor of virginity and the Christian faith, bravely
resisted the corruption and barbarous cruelty of the persecutors
and were pierced by blows of lances.

Maria Goretti, virgin and martyr,
who went through a rough childhood, helping her mother in
domestic tasks, and in constant prayer, in the twelfth year
of her age, defending her chastity against an assailant
near Nettuno in Latium of Italy, confessed [attested to
her faith] by [through the] blows of a dagger, [and] was
killed.
2. At Nicomedia
in Bithynia, Saint Cyriaca, virgin and martyr under
Diocletian, who is honored with the greatest veneration
at Tropea in Calabria.
3. At Fiesole
in Etruria, Saint Romulus, deacon, who is celebrated
as the first martyr of the city.

Saint Sisoes, surnamed the Great, hermit, very distinguished

in England, the passion of Saint Thomas More, who
is commemorated on the twenty-second day of June together

same place, blessed Thomas Alfield, priest and martyr,
who at first, under coercion, abjured the Catholic faith,
but having been driven into exile, returned to his homeland
repentant, and under Queen Elizabeth the First, because
he had distributed a certain Apology on behalf of
the Catholics, endured the punishment of the gibbet at Tyburn.
11. At anchor
in the open sea before Rochefort on the coast of France,
blessed Augustine Joseph (Elisée) Desgardin, monk
of the Cistercian Order and martyr, who, in the time
of the French upheaval, was taken from the monastery of
Sept-Fons out of hatred for religion and, thrown onto a
squalid ship, afflicted by disease, died while aiding his
fellow sick captives.
12. At Orange
likewise in France, blessed Susanna Agatha (Marie Rose)
de Laye, virgin of the Order of Saint Benedict and
martyr, who, while the French turmoil was raging, was
the first of a group of thirty-two religious women from
various Orders and convents imprisoned in the same jail
to persevere in religious life, and, having been condemned
with the others in hatred of the Christian Name in the days
following, approached the gallows fearlessly.
13. At the
place Shuangzhong near Jixian in the Hebei
Province of China, Saint Peter Wang Zuolong, martyr,
who, during the persecution of the followers of the “Yihetuan,”
having been led into a pagan temple and refusing to abjure
the faith of Christ, was hanged on a stake.
14. At Rome,
blessed Maria Theresa Ledóchowska, virgin, who devoted
herself entirely to Africans oppressed by slavery and founded
the Sodality of Saint Peter Claver.
15. At Buenos
Aires in Argentina, blessed Nazaria of Saint Teresa March
Mesa, virgin, who, born in Spain and having immigrated
with her family to Mexico, moved by missionary zeal, devoted
herself entirely to evangelizing the poor in various nations
of Latin America and founded the Institute of the Missionary
Crusaders of the Church.

July
1. Commemoration
of Saint Pantænus of Alexandria, a man apostolic and
adorned with all wisdom, whose zeal and love for the word
of God is handed down to have been so great, that, enkindled
with faith and devotion, he set out to preach the Gospel
of Christ to the nations, who are hidden in the remote retreats
of the East, and finally, having returned to Alexandria,
there, under the emperor Antoninus Caracalla, he rested
in peace.
2. At Eboriaci
in the district of Meaux in Aquitaine, Saint Ethelburga,
abbess of the monastery of Faremoutiers, who, a daughter
of the king of the East Angles, gave glory to God by strict
bodily abstinence and perpetual virginity.
3. At Winchester
in England, Saint Hedda, bishop of the West Saxons,
a man distinguished for wisdom, who transferred the body
of Saint Birinus from Dorchester to this city and established
his own episcopal seat there.
4. At Eichstätt
in Franconia, Saint Willibald, bishop, who, having
become a monk, journeyed through the holy places and many
regions to restore monastic life, and at length assisted
Saint Boniface, by whom he was ordained the first bishop
of that city, in the work of evangelizing Germany, and converted
many peoples to Christ.
5. At Tallaght
in Ireland, Saint Mael Ruain, bishop and abbot, who
earnestly restored the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy,
the veneration of the Saints, and monastic discipline.
6. At Urgell
in Catalonia of Spain, Saint Odo, bishop, who, although
still a layman, was elected by acclamation of the people
and confirmed, defended the lowly, and showed himself kind
to all.
7. At Perugia
in Umbria, the passing of blessed Benedict XI, pope,
of the Order of Preachers, who, gentle and mild, a peacemaker
and lover of peace, in the brief span of his pontificate
promoted peace in the Church, the restoration of discipline,
and the growth of religion.
8. At Fossano
in the Subalpine region, blessed Oddino Barotti, priest,
who, a poor parish priest and austere in life, during a
raging plague, consumed all his strength day and night for
the sick and dying.
9. At Winchester
in England, the blessed martyrs Roger Dickinson, priest,
and Ralph Milner, a farmer and poor head of a household
and unlettered, but firm in faith, who, under Queen Elizabeth
I, were captured together and killed by hanging; with
them is commemorated blessed Lawrence Humphrey, who,
having embraced the Catholic faith as a young man, died
by hanging on an uncertain day at the same place.

sea strait off Rochefort in France, blessed John Joseph
Juge de Saint-Martin, priest and martyr, who, a canon
of Limoges, during the French turmoil was inhumanely detained
on a prison-ship for being a priest, where, consumed by
disease, he passed to the Lord.

at Orange in France, blessed Iphigénie of Saint Matthew
(Françoise Marie Suzanne) de Gaillard de la Valdène, virgin
of the Order of Saint Benedict and martyr during
the French upheaval.
12. Near

from receiving the Eucharist because he refused to abstain
from the use of opium, nevertheless did not cease to beg
for a pious end to his life and, when brought to judgment,
having professed the faith of Christ with steadfast spirit,
attained the eternal banquet.
14. In the
village of Hujiacun near Shenxian, also in Hebei, Saint
Mary Guo Lizhi, martyr, who, in the same persecution,
like a second mother of the Maccabees, strengthened seven
of her family, whom she accompanied to their place of execution,
in constancy of soul, begging that she be killed afterward;
finally, she followed those whom she had sent on ahead to
heaven.
15. In the
village of Rakunai in New Britain, an island of Melanesia,
blessed Peter To Rot, martyr, who, a head of a
family and catechist, during the Second World War, was
arrested for persevering in his ministry and fulfilled his
martyrdom by the injection of a lethal poison.
16. At León
in Nicaragua, blessed Mary Romero Meneses, virgin
of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians,
who in the territory of Costa Rica worked kindly for the
education of girls, especially the poor and abandoned, and
widely spread devotion to the Eucharist and the Blessed
Virgin Mary.

July
1. Commemoration
of of Saints Aquila and Prisca, also called Priscilla,
a married couple who were helpers of Saint Paul the
Apostle. They received the Church into their house as guests,
and for Paul’s sake they laid down their necks.
2. At Heraclea
in Thrace, Saint Glyceria suffered martyrdom.
3. At Caesarea
in Palestine, Saint Procopius, martyr, who, under
the emperor Diocletian, was led from the city of Scythopolis
to Caesarea and there, at the very first confident confession
in his replies, was beheaded by the judge Fabian.
4. At Taormina
in Sicily, Saint Pancras, bishop and martyr, who
is believed to have been the first to preside over that
Church.
5. At Toul
in Belgic France, Saint Auspicius, bishop.
6. In the
region of Rhenania, Saint Disibod, hermit, who, having
gathered some companions, founded a monastery near the bank
of the river Navae.
7. At Belesie
in Brabant, Saint Landrada, abbess.
8. At Würzburg
in Austrasia, Saint Kilian, bishop and martyr, who,
originally from Ireland, came to that place to preach the
Gospel and, on account of his diligent observance of Christian
morals, completed his martyrdom by being murdered.
9. At Constantinople,
the passion of the holy monks known as the Abrahamites,
who, under the emperor Theophilus, were martyred for their
veneration of sacred Images.
10. At Spina
Lamberti in Emilia, the passing of Saint Hadrian III,
pope, who made every effort to reconcile the Church
of Constantinople with the Roman Church; and when he was
on a journey to France, he was struck with a grave illness
and died in a most holy manner.
11. At Tivoli
in Latium, the passing of blessed Eugene III, pope,
who was the beloved disciple of Saint Bernard and served
as abbot of the monastery of Saints Vincent and Anastasius
at Aquae Salviae. Elected to the Roman See, he labored earnestly
to defend the Christian people of the City from the snares
of the infidels and to restore ecclesiastical discipline
for the better.
12. At Shimabara
in Japan, blessed Mancio Araki, martyr, who, having
received blessed Francis Pacheco, a priest, into his home,
was cast into prison, where he died, consumed by tuberculosis.
13. In the
city of Iomnienina, in the province of Hebei in China,
Saint John Wu Wenyin, martyr, who, being a catechist
during the persecution stirred up by the supporters of the
“Yihetuan” sect, because he refused to abandon the Christian
faith and defect to the pagans, was condemned to death by
beheading.

Augustine Zhao Rong, priest, Peter Sans i Jordà, bishop,
and companions1,
martyrs,
who, in various times and places in China, bore vigorous
witness to the Gospel of Christ by word and by deed, and,
on account of the preaching or confession of the faith,
were refreshed by glorious heavenly banquets as victims
of persecutions.
2. At Reggio
Emilia, blessed Joan Scopelli, virgin of the Order
of Carmelites, who founded a monastery from the gifts of
her fellow citizens and was able to provide bread to the
sisters in the refectory through prayer.
3. At London
in England, blessed Adrian Fortescue, martyr, who,
a father of a family and a knight, under King Henry
the Eighth, was accused by a slanderous charge of treason
and, after being twice detained in prison, at last fulfilled
his martyrdom by being beheaded.
4. At Brielle
on the Meuse among the Dutch, the passion of the holy
martyrs Nicholas Pieck, priest, and ten companions of the
Order of Friars Minor, and eight others of either the diocesan
or religious clergy 2,
who, for defending the doctrine of the presence of Christ
in the Eucharist and the authority of the Roman Church,
endured various insults and tortures from the Calvinists,
and finally completed their struggle by being hanged.
5. At Città
di Castello in Umbria, Saint Veronica Giuliani, abbess
of the Order of the Capuchin Poor Clares, who, endowed with
spiritual charisms, shared in the Passion of Christ in body
and soul, for which reason she was placed in confinement
for fifty days, offering a wondrous example of patience
and obedience.

in the region of Provence in France, blessed Mélanie
and Mary Anne Magdalen de Guilhermier and Mary Anne Margaret
of the Angels de Rocher, virgins of the Order of Saint
Ursula and martyrs in the time of the French upheaval.

city of Qingyan in Guizhou province of China,
Saint Joachim He Kaizhi, martyr, a catechist, who was
strangled for the faith of Christ.
8. In the
city of Taiyuan in Shanxi province likewise in China,
the passion of Saints Gregory Grassi and Francis Fogolla,
bishops of the Order of Friars Minor, and twenty-four
companions 3, martyrs,
who were killed in the persecution of the followers of the
“Yihetuan” in hatred of the name of Christ.

Paulo in Brazil, Saint Pauline of the Agonizing Heart
of Jesus (Amabile Visintainer), virgin, who, having
migrated from Italy as a young girl, founded the Congregation
of the Little Sisters of the Immaculate Conception in
service to the sick and the poor, and, after many trials,
served in the greatest humility and constant prayer.

near Munich in Bavaria, Germany, blessed Fidelis Chijnacki,
religious of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin and
martyr, who, taken from Poland under a wicked regime
to a detention camp because of his confession of Christ,
having been tortured, attained eternal glory.

the holy martyrs Felix and Philip in the cemetery of
Priscilla, Vitalis, Martial, and Alexander in that of
the Jordani, Silanus in that of Maximus, and Januarius in
that of Praetextatus; whose united commemoration the
Roman Church rejoices in, which on one day is glorified
by so many triumphs, because it is fortified by manifold
intercession with manifold example.

Via Cornelia, nine miles from the city of Rome, the holy
martyrs Rufina and Secunda.
3. In the
Sabine region, the holy martyrs Anatolia and Victoria.

in Umbria, Saint Peter Vincioli, priest and abbot,
who rebuilt the ancient church of Saint Peter, which had
fallen into ruin, and joined a monastery to it, where, amid
frequent opposition, but with great patience, he introduced
the customs of Cluny.
11. At Odense
in Denmark, Saint Canute, martyr, who, as a king
inflamed with zeal, expanded divine worship in his kingdom,
promoted the state of clerics, and, after founding the churches
of Lund and Odense, was at last killed by some rebellious
citizens.

in the province of France, blessed Mary Gertrude of Saint
Sophia de Ripert d’Alauzin and Agnes of Jesus (Sylvia) de
Romillon, virgins of the Order of Saint Ursula and

who were strangled for the faith of Christ under Emperor

Ruiz, priest, and companions4
— seven of the Order of Friars Minor and three lay
brothers faithful of the Maronite Church — who, treacherously
handed over by a betrayer to enemies, were afflicted with
various tortures for the faith and completed their martyrdom
with a glorious death.

This Day, the Eleventh Day of
July
Memorial
of Saint Benedict, abbot,
who, born at Norcia in Umbria and educated at Rome, began
the eremitic life in the region of Subiaco, gathering many
disciples around himself, then went to Cassino, where
he founded a famous monastery and composed a Rule, which
spread throughout all regions so effectively that he deserved
to be called the patriarch of monks in the West. He
is said to have died on the twenty-first day of March.

Saint
Henry,
who, as
Roman Emperor, together with his wife Saint Cunegonde,
devoted effort to the reform of the life of the Church and
the spread of the Christian faith throughout all Europe;
and, moved by missionary zeal, he established several episcopal
sees and founded monasteries. He departed from this
life on this day at Grona near Göttingen in Franconia.
2. Commemoration
of Saint Ezra, priest and scribe, who, in the time of
Artaxerxes, king of the Persians, returned from Babylon
to Judea, gathered the dispersed people, and with every
effort strove to study, fulfill, and teach the law of the
Lord in Israel.
3. Commemoration
of Saint Silas, who, having been appointed by the Apostles
to the Churches of the Gentiles together with Saints Paul
and Barnabas, fulfilled the office of preaching with great
fervor, full of the grace of God.
4. At Alexandria
in Egypt, Saint Serapion, martyr, who under the emperor

Jarrige de la Morélie de Biars, priests and martyrs,
who, during the persecution against the Church, were condemned
to forced labor in naval chains because of their priesthood,
contracted disease, and perished as victims of charity toward
their fellow prisoners.

in the Province of France, the blesseds Magdalene of
the Mother of God (Elisabeth Verchère) and five companions6,

Baccilieri, priest, who diligently cared for the people
entrusted to him and founded the Congregation of the

province of Hebei in China, Saint Paul Liu Jinde,
martyr, who, an elderly man, during the persecution
carried out by the followers of the “Yihetuan” remained
the only Christian in the village and, holding a rosary
and a book of prayers in his hand, went out to meet his
persecutors and greeted them in a Christian manner, for
which he was immediately killed by them.

city of Nangong, also in Hebei, Saint Joseph
Wang Guiji, martyr, who, in the same persecution, when
he had the opportunity to save his life by a minor lie,
chose instead a glorious death for Christ.

city of Angostura in Colombia, blessed Mariano of

followed military service and being inclined to the vices
of the world, at last was converted and strove greatly in
serving the sick in a hospital of the incurable as if Christ
Himself; and, having been raised to the priesthood, he laid
the foundations in Rome of the Congregation of Clerics
Regular who minister to the sick.
2. At Brescia
in Venetia, Saint Optatian, bishop, who subscribed
the synodal letters concerning the Catholic faith on the
Incarnation, sent by Bishop Eusebius of Milan to Saint Leo
the Pope.
3. At Soignies
in Austrasian Brabant, Saint Vincent, also called Madelgarus,
who, with the consent of his wife, Saint Waltrude, embraced
the monastic life and is said to have founded two monasteries.
4. At Deventer
in Frisia, Saint Marchelmus, priest and monk, who,
of English birth, was from childhood a disciple of Saint
Willibrord and a companion in the works undertaken for Christ.
5. At the
place called Stary Kynsperk near Eger in Bohemia,
blessed Hroznata, martyr, who, after the death
of his wife and son, left the duke’s court and entered the
Premonstratensian monastery of Tepl, and, while defending
its rights, is said to have been captured by robbers and
brought to death by hunger.
6. At Verona
in Venetia, Saint Toscana, who, her husband having
died, gave all her goods to the poor and never ceased caring
for the sick in the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem.
7. At Foligno
in Umbria, blessed Angelina of Marsciano, who, as
a widow, spent more than fifty years wholly in the
service of God and the good of her neighbor and initiated
the religious life of cloistered Franciscan Third Order
women for the instruction of girls.
8. At Valencia
in Spain, blessed Gaspar de Bono, priest of the Order
of Minims, who laid aside the arms of an earthly prince
for the service of Christ the King and ruled the houses
of the Spanish province of the Order with zeal, prudence,
and charity.
9. At Lima
in Peru, Saint Francis Solano, priest of the Order
of Friars Minor, who, for the salvation of souls, traveled
far and wide through the regions of South America, and by
preaching and signs devoted all his efforts to teaching
the novelty of Christian life to the indigenous peoples
and even to the Spanish colonists.
10. At London
in England, blessed Richard Langhorne, martyr, who,
a distinguished lawyer, was accused of treason under
King Charles II, condemned to death, and gave up his spirit
at the gallows of Tyburn.
11. At the
place Cerecca-Ghebaba in Ethiopia, blessed Ghebre
Michael, priest of the Congregation of the Mission
and martyr, who always sought the true faith in study
and prayer and at length entered into the unity of the Church,
for which he suffered imprisonment, then forced marches
with soldiers, his feet weighed down by chains, for thirteen
months, until he died, worn out by scourging, thirst, and
hunger.

Saint John Wang Guixin, martyr, who, in the persecution

Memorial
of the death of Saint Bonaventure, bishop of Albano and
Doctor of the Church,
most celebrated for his teaching, holiness of life, and
outstanding service rendered to the Church. He wisely
governed the Order of Friars Minor, of which he was minister
general, in the spirit of Saint Francis. In many writings
he joined the highest learning with the ardor of piety.
While he was offering excellent help in the affairs of the
Second Ecumenical Council of Lyon, he deserved to attain
the blessed vision of God.
2. At Portus
Romanus, the holy martyrs Eutropius, Zosimus, and Bonosa.
3. At Carthage,
on the road called after the Scillitan Martyrs, in the basilica
of Faustus, the death of Saint Felix, bishop of Thibiuca
and martyr, who, when ordered by the curator Magnilianus
to hand over the books of Scripture to the fire, replied
that it was better for him to be burned by fire than to
give up the divine Scriptures; therefore, he was sentenced
to death by the sword under the proconsul Anulinus.
4. In the
same place, the commemoration of the holy Catulinus,
deacon and martyr, whose praises Saint Augustine delivered
in a sermon to the people, and of the other martyrs who
rest in the basilica of Faustus.

Thessaly, died of hunger.

under the name Basil and spent his efforts spreading
the Orthodox faith among the peoples subject to him.
13. At Ratzeburg
in Holstein of Germany, Saint Ansuerus, abbot and martyr,
who, with twenty-eight monks, was stoned by the Wends
who rose up against the preachers of the Christian faith.
14. At Västerås
in Sweden, Saint David, bishop, who, an Englishman
by nation, a monk of Cluny, went to convert the Swedes to
Christ and rested piously as an old man in the monastery
he had founded.
15. At Breslau
in Silesia, blessed Ceslaus, priest, one of the first
brothers of the Order of Preachers, who worked for the Kingdom
of God in Silesia and other regions of Poland.
16. In the
town of Mont Cenis in the Subalpine region, blessed Bernard,
who, a marquess of Baden, while journeying to the East to
defend Christian peoples after the capture of Constantinople
by the enemies, was overtaken by death.

condemned; the former because he had entered England as
a priest, the latter because he assisted him, and through

town of Cunhaú near Natal in Brazil, blessed Andrew
de Soveral, priest of the Society of Jesus, and Dominic
Carvalho, martyrs, who, while the Mass was being celebrated,
were treacherously shut in the church with a group of the
faithful by soldiers and cruelly killed.

prison ship anchored before Rochefort on the coast of France,
blessed Nicholas Savouret, of the Order of Friars
Minor Conventual, and Claude Beguignot, of the Carthusian
Order, priests and martyrs, who, during the French
Revolution, were detained in vile captivity out of hatred
for the priesthood, and fell ill and died.

and martyrs, who, because they refused to renounce religious
life during the same persecution, were condemned to death

Saint Mary Magdalene Postel, virgin, who, in that
same time of upheaval, offered every assistance to the sick
and the faithful when priests had been expelled, and, once
peace was restored, founded and governed the Congregation
of the Daughters of Mercy for the Christian instruction
of poor girls.
16. In the
place Lijiapo near Qinghe in the province
of Hebei in China, the holy martyrs Lang Yangzhi,
a catechumen, and Paul Lang Fu, her son, who, during
the persecution carried out by the supporters of the “Yihetuan”
movement, when the mother had professed herself to be a
Christian, suffered martyrdom for Christ in their home destroyed
by fire.
17. In the
village Zhangjiaji near Ningjin, likewise
in Hebei, Saint Teresa Zhang Hezhi, martyr,
who, during the same persecution, when she had been dragged
to the pagoda of the pagans and refused to offer reverence
to the local deities, was pierced with a spear together

who, by order of the proconsul Saturninus, after their first
confession of Christ were thrown into prison, and on the
following day, having been fixed to wood, when at last they
had firmly confessed that they were Christians and had refused
divine honor to the emperor, were condemned to death, and,
at the place of execution, with knees bent in unanimity
and giving thanks to Christ, were beheaded with the sword.

into Hungary and lived a most austere life in the wilderness

Prešov in Slovakia, blessed Paul (Peter) Gojdič,
bishop and martyr, who, a pastor in the territory of
Prešov, during a regime hostile to God was thrown into prison
and suffered such hardships that, grievously tormented,
faithfully accepting the words of Christ, by a valiant confession
passed into glorious life.

1. On the
Via Tiburtina, at the ninth milestone from the city of Rome,
the commemoration of the holy martyrs Symphorosa and
her seven sons, Crescens, Julian, Nemesius, Primitivus,
Justinus, Stacteus, and Eugenius,who completed their
martyrdom by different kinds of death, made brothers in
Christ.
2. At Milan
in Liguria, Saint Maternus, bishop, who, when the
Church had been restored to liberty, transferred with honor
the bodies of the martyrs Nabor and Felix from Laud Pompey
to his own city.
3. At Durostorum
in Moesia, Saint Emilian, martyr, who, scorning the
edicts of Julian the Apostate and the threats of his deputy
Catulinus, overthrew the altar of idols and prevented the
sacrifice, and, being thrown into a furnace, received the
palm of martyrdom.
4. At Brescia
in Venetia, Saint Philastrius, bishop, whose life
and death were praised by Saint Gaudentius, his successor.
5. At Foro
Popilii in Emilia, Saint Ruffillus, bishop, who is
believed to have been the first to govern this Church and
to have brought the entire rural people to Christ.

in Austrasia, Saint Arnulf, bishop, who was a counselor
of Dagobert, king of Austrasia, and, having laid down his

had ordered to be taken down from the Bronze Gate of the
imperial palace, suffered martyrdom.

noted for his study of the Sacred Scriptures, devoted care
and labor to the evangelization of the Frisians.

in Latium, Saint Bruno, bishop, who did and suffered
many things for the reform of the Church; for this reason,
he was forced to leave his see, found refuge on Monte Cassino,
and for a time served as abbot of the monastery.

in Poland, the commemoration of blessed Simon of Lipnica,
priest of the Order of Minors, who, outstanding in preaching
and devotion to the Name of Jesus, moved by charity, met
death while caring for those dying in the plague.

off the coast of Rochefort in France, blessed John the
Baptist of Brussels, priest of Limoges and martyr,
who, during the French Revolution, worn out by hunger and
pestilential disease in the squalor of a prison ship, died.

city of Nam Định in Tonkin, Saint Dominic Nicholas Đinh
Dat, martyr, who, though a soldier, was forced
to deny the Christian faith, and after severe tortures trampled
the cross; but immediately repenting of what he had done,
paid the price of his apostasy and wrote to the emperor
Minh Mạng to be judged again as a Christian; at last, he
was strangled and died.

village of Krystonopil in Ukraine, blessed Tarsykia (Olha)
Matskiv, virgin of the Congregation of the Sisters
Servants of Mary Immaculate and martyr, who, in time
of war, for defending the faith before persecutors, attained
a double crown: of virginity and of martyrdom.

of Saint Epaphras, who labored much for the Gospel at
Colossae, Laodicea, and Hierapolis, and is called by blessed
Paul the Apostle his dearest fellow servant, fellow prisoner,
and faithful minister of Christ.
2. At Merus
in Phrygia, the holy martyrs Macedonius, Theodulus, and
Tatian, who, under the emperor Julian the Apostate,
by the governor Almachius, after other torments, were placed
upon iron grates heated by fire, and rejoicing, completed
their martyrdom.
3. In the
monastery of Annesis by the river Iris in Pontus, Saint
Macrina, virgin, sister of Saints Basil the Great, Gregory
of Nyssa, and Peter of Sebaste, who, educated in the Sacred
Scriptures, devoted herself to the solitary life, a wondrous
example of the desire for God and of withdrawal from the
vanity of the world.
4. At Constantinople,
Saint Dii, surnamed Thaumatugi, archimandrite, who,
born in Antioch, was ordained priest in this city and founded
a monastery under the Rule of the Acoemeti.
5. At Rome
near Saint Peter’s, Saint Symmachus, pope, who, long
harassed by the faction of schismatics, at last, as a confessor
of the faith, rested in peace.
6. At Cordoba
in the region of Vandalicia in Spain, Saint Aurea, virgin,
sister of the holy martyrs Adolphus and John, who, during
the persecution of the Moors, was brought before the judge
and fell by fear, but soon repenting of her deed, in a renewed
struggle, overcame the enemy by the shedding of her blood.
7. At Utrecht
in Lotharingian Gelderland, Saint Bernold, or Bernulph,
bishop, who freed churches and monasteries from the
power of the mighty, founded many churches, and fostered
Cluniac customs in the monasteries.
8. In the
monastery of Marienberg in Franconia, blessed Stilla,
consecrated virgin, who was buried in the church which
she had founded.
9. At Foligno
in Umbria, blessed Peter Crisci, who, having given
all his possessions to the poor, devoted himself to the
service of the cathedral church, and chose to dwell in the
bell tower, humble and exceedingly penitent.
10. At Chester
in England, Saint John Plessington, priest and martyr,
who, having been made a priest at Segovia and returned to
England, for this reason under King Charles the Second was
condemned to the torments of hanging.
11. In the
village of Lujiazhuang near Yingxian in the
province of Hebei in China, Saint John Baptist
Zhou Wurui, martyr, who, though still a youth, openly
professed himself a Christian before the followers of the
“Yihetuan”, and for this reason had parts of his body mutilated
and was beheaded.
12. In the
town of Liucun near the city of Renqin, also
in Hebei, the holy martyrs Elizabeth Qin
Bianzhi and her son Simon Qin Chunfu, aged fourteen
years, who, in the same persecution, strong in faith, overcame
all the cruelty of their enemies.
13. In the
town of Borowikowszczyzna in Poland, blessed Achilleus
Puchała and Hermann Stępień, priests from the Order
of Friars Minor Conventual and martyrs, who, when
their homeland of Poland was violated by foreign military
power, were killed in hatred of the faith.

July
Saint
Apollinaris, bishop,
who, announcing to the nations the unsearchable riches of
Christ, as a good shepherd went before his flock, and is
said to have adorned the Church of Classe near Ravenna in
Flaminia with the famous honor of martyrdom; but on the
twenty-third day of July he passed over to the eternal banquet.
2. Commemoration
of Saint Elijah the Tishbite, who, prophet of the Lord
in the days of Ahab and Ahaziah, kings of Israel, vindicated
with such strength of soul the rights of the one God against
an unfaithful people, that he foreshadowed not only John
the Baptist but even Christ himself; he left behind no written
oracles, but his memory is faithfully preserved, especially
on Mount Carmel.
3. Commemoration
of blessed Joseph, who was called Barsabbas and surnamed
Justus, a disciple of the Lord, whom the apostles appointed
together with blessed Matthias to take the place of Judas
the traitor in the apostolic ministry; but when the lot
fell upon Matthias, he nevertheless fulfilled the office
of preaching and holiness.
4. At Antioch
in Pisidia, Saint Marina, or Margaret, who is said
to have consecrated her body to Christ by virginity and
martyrdom.
5. In Ethiopia,
Saint Frumentius, bishop, who, first captured there,
was later ordained bishop by Saint Athanasius, and spread
the Gospel in that region.
6. At Carthage,
Saint Aurelius, bishop, who, a most steadfast pillar
of the Church, strengthened the faithful against the customs
of the pagans and moved the episcopal seat from the place
of the idol of the goddess Celestis.
7. In the
countryside of Bologna in France, Saint Vulmar, priest,
who, drawn from humble shepherding to studies and having
attained the priesthood, sought the solitude of the desert
according to the custom of the ancient Fathers; then at
Hautmont in Hainaut in the forest of his homeland, he founded
a double monastery, one for men, the other for virgins.
8. At Corduba
in the region of Vandalic Spain, Saint Paul, deacon and
martyr, who, instructed by the example and word of Saint
Sisenandus, did not fear to rebuke the Moorish princes and
magistrates for the vanity of their worship, and, confessing
Christ the true God, was put to death.
9. At Hildesheim
in Saxony in Germany, blessed Bernard, bishop, who
governed his Church in peace for twenty-three years, although
blind.
10. At Seoul
in Korea, the holy martyrs Magdalene Yi Yŏng-hŭi, Terésiæ
Yi Mae-im, Marthæ Kim Sŏng-im, Lúciæ Kim, Rosæ Kim, Anna
Kim Chang-gŭm, and Mariæ Wŏn Kwi-im, virgins, and John the
Baptist Yi Kwang-nyol.
11. In the
city of Nam Dinh in Tonkin, Saint Joseph Maria
Diaz Sanjurjo, bishop of the Order of Preachers and
martyr, who, in the persecution raging under Emperor
Tự Đức, was condemned to death by beheading out of hatred
for the faith.
12. In the
village of Zhoujiahe near the city of Yingxian
in Hebei province of China, the passion of Saints
Leo Ignatius Mangin and Paul Denn, priests of the Society
of Jesus, who, while fervently encouraging the faithful
in church during the persecution carried out by followers
of the “Yingxian” sect, were pierced before the altar
by the invading enemies. With them fell Saint Mary Zhou
Wuzhi, who sought to protect Saint Leo with her body
as he offered the sacred rites and, struck by wounds, died.
13. In the
village of Lujiazhuang near Yingxian, likewise
in Hebei, Saint Peter Zhou Rixin, martyr,
who, during the same persecution, when the magistrate insisted,
refused to renounce God the Creator of the world, and for
that reason was beheaded.
14. In the
town of Daliucun near Wuyi, likewise in the
same province, Saint Mary Fu Guilin, teacher, who,
in the same persecution, was handed over to the enemies
of the Gospel and beheaded, invoking Christ the Savior.
15. In the
village of Wuqiao Zhaojia, likewise in Hebei,
commemoration of Saints Mary Zhao Guozhi and her daughters
Rosa Zhao and Mary Zhao, who, during the same persecution,
in order not to be violated, threw themselves into a well;
but after being pulled out, fulfilled their martyrdom.

town of Dechao, likewise in Hebei, commemoration
of Saint Xi Guizi, martyr, who, though still a catechumen,
when a crowd arose, declared himself to be a Christian,
and, torn with wounds, was baptized in his own blood.

in Spain, blesseds Rita of the Sorrowful Virgin of the
Heart of Jesus Pujalte y Sánchez and Francisca of the Heart
of Jesus Aldea y Araujo, virgins of the Congregation

and martyrs, who, during the religious persecution
raging in the civil war, were taken from the church of the
school by enemies of the Church.

This Day, the Twenty-first Day of

Saint
Lawrence of Brindisi, priest and Doctor of the Church,
who, enrolled among the Capuchin Friars Minor, carried out
the duty of preaching tirelessly in the regions of Europe,
both for the defense of the Church against unbelievers,
and in reconciling princes, and in the governance of his
Order, fulfilling all duties with simplicity and humility.
On the twenty-second day of July, he died at Lisbon in Portugal.

in the province of France, Saint Victor, martyr.
3. At Emesa
in Syria, Saint Simeon, surnamed the Fool, who, moved
by the divine Spirit, desired to be held as a fool for Christ
and contemptible among men. Likewise, the commemoration
of Saint John, hermit, who was for nearly thirty years
the companion of Saint Simeon in holy pilgrimage and in
the desert near the Lake Asphaltites.
4. At Rome,
the commemoration of Saint Praxedes, in whose name
a church dedicated to God is located on the Esquiline.

in Burgundy, Saint Arbogast, bishop.
6. In the
open sea before Rochefort off the coast of France, in the
squalor of a ship held at anchor, blessed Gabriel Pergaud,
priest and martyr, who, a canon regular of Beaulieu
in the district of Saint-Brieuc, was expelled from the abbey
because of his priesthood during the time of the French
upheaval, and having been handed over into captivity, was
struck by disease and crowned with martyrdom.
7. Near
Yanzibian close to Yangpingguan in China,
Saint Alberic Crescitelli, priest of the Pontifical
Institute for Foreign Missions and martyr, who, in
the persecution of the followers of the “Yihetuan”
was struck almost to death with great violence, and on the
following day, with his feet bound, was dragged along a
road paved with flint to the river, where he was cut to
pieces and at last beheaded, and was crowned with martyrdom.

in the province of Hebei, likewise in China, the
passion of Saint Joseph Wang Yumei, martyr in the same

who, having been freed by the Lord from seven demons and
made his disciple, followed him even to Mount Calvary, and,
early on the morning of Easter, was the first to merit seeing
the Savior risen from the dead and to bring the message
of the Resurrection to the other disciples.

in Galatia, Saint Plato, martyr.
3. In Africa,
the holy martyrs of Massilia, on whose natal day
Saint Augustine gave a sermon.
4. At Antioch
in Syria, Saint Cyril, bishop, who, under the emperor

fortress of Suani in the Caucasus Mountains, Saint Anastasius,

martyr, who, during the great persecution against the
Church, was inhumanely detained because of his priesthood
and died consumed by an incurable illness.

of Hebei in China, the holy martyrs Anna Wang,
virgin, Lucia Wang Wangzhi, and her son Andrew Wang Tianqing,
who were killed for the name of Christ during the persecution

Saint
Bridget, religious,
who, given in marriage in Sweden to Ulf the lawgiver, most
devoutly raised the eight children she bore, and stirred
her husband himself to piety by words and example.
After his death, she journeyed to many sacred places, and,
leaving writings concerning the reform of the head and members
of the Mystical Church and laying the foundations of the
Order of the Most Holy Savior, she departed to heaven at
Rome.
2. Commemoration
of Saint Ezekiel, prophet, who, the son of Buzi the
priest, in the time of the exile in the land of the Chaldeans,
was marked by a vision of the glory of the Lord and appointed
as a watchman over the house of Israel. He denounced
the unfaithfulness of the chosen people, foresaw that the
holy city Jerusalem would be cast into ruins and the people
sent into exile; he himself, placed in the midst of the
captives, nourished their hope and prophesied that their
dry bones would rise to life.

near Ravenna in Flaminia, the commemoration of Saint
Apollinaris, bishop, whose memory is celebrated on the
twentieth of July.

in Tunisia, Saint Severus, martyr, who, in the times

taken from the monastery of Lérins to the episcopate, set

day and night, he served God. On the twenty-fourth
of December, he rested in the Lord.

and Gleb shortly thereafter in the Dnieper River near Smolensk.

sent by him to that city to found and govern the monastery

who, the son of Zebedee and brother of the blessed John
the Evangelist, was a witness with Peter and John of the
Lord’s Transfiguration and His agony. Near the feast
of Easter, he was beheaded by Herod Agrippa, and he was
the first of the Apostles to receive the crown of martyrdom.

Saint Christopher, martyr.
3. At Barcelona
in Tarraconensian Spain, Saint Cucuphas, martyr,
who, during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian, struck
with the sword, victoriously departed to heaven.
4. At Caesarea
in Palestine, the holy martyrs Valentina, Thea, and Paul,
during the persecution of Emperor Maximian under the governor
Firmilian. Valentina, a virgin, after she had kicked over
the altar erected to idols, was subjected to dreadful torments
and, together with the virgin Thea, was cast into fire and
ran to the Bridegroom. Paul, condemned to death, after
obtaining a brief space to pray, prayed to God with his
whole heart for the salvation of all; his head having been
cut off, he received the crown of martyrdom.

out of hatred for religion, died from starvation and disease.

who, having received the surname from the blessed Apostle,
fulfilled his office in such a way that he enclosed multitudes
into the faith with the net of heavenly teaching and satisfied
them with the sweetness of the divine word. His passing
at Forum Cornelii in Flaminia occurred on the following
day.
2. At Rome,
in the cemetery of Pontianus on the Via Portuensis, the
holy martyrs Abdon and Sennen.
3. At Caesarea
in Cappadocia, Saint Julitta, martyr, who, when she
steadfastly refused the judge’s command to offer incense
to the idols, was cast into the fire.
4. At Thuburbo
Lucernaria in Africa, the holy virgins and martyrs Maxima,
Donatilla, and Secunda, of whom the first two, in the
persecution of the emperor Diocletian, without fear rejected
the command of Caesar to sacrifice to idols and, by the
sentence of the proconsul Anulinus, together with the
girl Secunda, were first handed over to the beasts,
then their throats slit with the sword.

theology, who resisted the divorce proposed by King
Henry VIII and steadfastly persevered in fidelity to the

his first companions, whom he later established at Rome
in the Society of Jesus, where he himself fruitfully
exercised ministry both in writing works and in forming
disciples, “for the greater glory of God.”

Munich in Bavaria, Germany, in the detention camp of Dachau,
blessed Michael Oziębłowski, priest and martyr, who,
having been forcibly deported from his native Poland under
a regime hostile to religion, was imprisoned in a foreign
camp, where he endured torture and fulfilled his martyrdom.
17. At Kalisz
in Poland, blessed Francis Stryjas, martyr, who,
during the same time, broken by many torments, gloriously
passed to the Lord.
18. At Trnava
in Slovakia, blessed Zdenka (Cecilia) Schelingová, virgin
of the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Holy
Cross and martyr, who, in a most difficult time for
the Church in her nation, having suffered greatly in body
and spirit for the sake of a priest whom she had helped,
finally worn out by illness, shone as an untiring and joyful
witness of Christ.
