Saint Martin de Porres, religious
of the Order of Preachers, who, born of a Spanish man and
a black woman, already from boyhood, although passing through
hardships arising from the condition of being the illegitimate
and mixed-race son, learned the art of medicine, which afterwards,
having become a religious, he generously practiced at Lima
in Peru for the poor, and, given to fasting, penance, and
prayer, he led a harsh and humble life, radiant with charity.

Theophilus, and Cyril.

At Agrigento in Sicily, Saint Libertinus, bishop and

monk, who, after more than twenty years in military
service, having left the army, led a solitary life in the
various passes of Olympus, being accustomed to accompany
prayer with these words: “My hope is God, my refuge is Christ,

At Alem in Flanders, the deposition of Saint Odrada,
virgin.

At Urgell in Catalonia of Spain, Saint Ermengaud, bishop,
among the illustrious prelates who took care to restore
the Church in the lands freed from the yoke of the Moors,

a bridge, having fallen down, with his skull shattered among
the stones, he died.

enclosed in a cell until old age.

religious of the Order of Preachers, who chose a life

At the fortress of Xã Đoài in Tonkin [Vietnam],
Saint Peter Francis Néron, priest of the Paris Society
of Foreign Missions and martyr, who, under the emperor
Tự Đức, was kept for three months thrust into a most narrow
cage and, having been cruelly beaten with rods, abstained
from all food for three weeks, and at length, his head having
been cut off, consummated his martyrdom.

This Day, the Fourth Day of
November
Memorial of Saint Charles Borromeo, bishop,
who, having been enrolled among the cardinals by his uncle
Pope Pius IV and elected Bishop of Milan, was in that see
a true shepherd, attentive to the needs of the Church of
his time: to form the clergy he gathered synods and established
seminaries; to foster Christian morals he visited the whole
flock many times and decreed many things for the salvation
of souls. He departed for his heavenly homeland on
the day before this day.
2.
At Bologna in Emilia, the holy
martyrs Vitalis and Agricola, of whom, as Saint Ambrose
relates, the former was once the servant of the other, then
his companion and fellow in martyrdom: for this one endured
every kind of torture in such manner that there was no place
on his body without a wound; but the other, not terrified
by the punishment of his servant, being affixed to a cross,
imitated his martyrdom.

At Myra in Lycia, the holy martyrs Nicander, bishop,
and Hermes, priest.
4.
Commemoration of Saint Pierius, priest of Alexandria,
who, illustrious in philosophical teachings but more distinguished
for integrity of life and voluntary poverty, while Theonas
was governing the Church of Alexandria, taught the people
the divine Scriptures thoroughly, and after the persecution
rested in peace at Rome.
5.
At Rodez in Aquitaine, Saint Amantius, bishop, who is believed
to have been the first prelate of this city.

At Maastricht in Brabant of Austrasia, Saint Perpetuus,
bishop.

At Trier in Austrasia, Saint Modesta, abbess, who,
consecrated to God from her very infancy, presided worthily
over the flock of nuns of the monastery of Oeren in the
same city, and was united in the highest intimacy in God
with Saint Gertrude of Nivelles.

At Székesfehérvár in Pannonia, Saint Emeric, or Henry,
son of Saint Stephen, King of the Hungarians, who was overtaken
by an untimely death.

At Padua in Venetia, blessed Helen Enselmini, virgin
of the Order of Poor Clares, who bore many pains and even
the loss of speech with wondrous patience.

At Cerfroid in the territory of Meaux in France, Saint
Felix of Valois, who, after he had led a solitary life
for a long time, is held to have been the companion of Saint
John of Matha in founding the Order of the Most Holy
Trinity for the Redemption of Captives.

In the convent of the Scots at Nantes in France, blessed
Frances d’Amboise, who, Duchess of Brittany, first founded
at Vannes in France a convent of Carmelite nuns, into which,
having been widowed, she withdrew as a handmaid of Christ.

1.
At Caesarea in Palestine, Saint Domninus, martyr,
who, a young physician, at the beginning of the persecution
of Emperor Diocletian, was condemned to the mines and banished
to Phoenicia, where he endured cruel hardships; and, because
he had firmly kept his confession, in the fifth year of
the persecution, by order of the governor Urban, was commanded
to be consigned to the fire.
2.
In the same place, the commemoration of the holy martyrs
Theotimus, Philotheus, and Timothy, who, being young
men, were assigned to the circus games for the amusement
of the people, and of Saint Auxentius, an old man,
who was handed over to the beasts.

In Apulia, Saint Mark, bishop of Aeca.

At Trier in Rhenish Austrasia, Saint Fibicius, bishop.
5.
In Brittany, Saint Guethnoc, who is held in honor
as the brother of the saints Winwaloeus and Jacut.

Saint Bertilla, first abbess.

a man of wondrous uprightness and simplicity, who, though

in his dignity was all the more committed to humility.

At Constantinople, blessed Gomidas Keumurgian (Cosmas
of Carbonianus), priest and martyr, who, a head of
a family, born and ordained in the Church of the Armenians,
for the Catholic faith professed by the Council of Chalcedon,
which he firmly held and spread, suffered many things, and
finally, while reciting the Nicene Creed, fell by beheading.

Near the river Hưng Yên in Tonkin, Saint Dominic Mậu,
priest of the Order of Preachers and martyr,
who, in the persecution of Emperor Tự Đức, publicly carrying
the Rosary and exhorting Christians to the profession of
faith, was led to the punishment of beheading, with hands
joined as if at the altar, for Christ.

At Parma in Italy, blessed Guido Maria Conforti, bishop,
who, a good shepherd, always watched for the defense of
the Church and the faith of the people, and, moved by zeal
for the evangelization of peoples, founded the Pious
Society of Saint Francis Xavier.
11.
At Madrid in Spain, blessed John Antony Burró Mas, religious
of the Order of Saint John of God and martyr, killed
in the persecution against the Church because of his evangelical
profession.
12.
In the place called El Saler near Valencia likewise
in Spain, blessed Mary of Mount Carmel Viel Ferrando,
virgin and martyr, who in the same time of persecution
fought an outstanding contest for Christ.
13.
In the town of Hof in Germany, blessed Bernard Lichtenberg,
priest and martyr, who, when the dignity of God and
of men was being violated, publicly prayed for the Jews
who were inhumanly harassed and detained; for which reason
he himself was arrested and sent to the concentration camp
of Dachau, and on the way, overwhelmed by hardships, yet
fearless in Christ, died.
14.
In the concentration camp of the city of Abé in the Siberian
province of Russia, blessed Gregory Lakota, bishop
of Przemyśl and martyr, who, when his homeland was
oppressed by persecutors of the faith, overcame the torments
of the body with a fearless death for Christ.

At Thinis in Numidia, Saint Felix, martyr, of whom
Saint Augustine is thought to speak to the people, saying:
“Truly happy both in name and in crown. For he confessed,
he was delayed to the torments; on the following day his
lifeless body was found in prison.”
2.
Commemoration of Saint Paul, bishop of Constantinople
and martyr, who was often driven out by the Arians
because he had kept the Nicene faith, and more than once
restored to his office; at length, banished by Emperor Constantius
to Cucusus, a small town of Cappadocia, there, by the treachery
of the Arians, he is said to have been cruelly strangled.

At Rennes in Brittany, Saint Melanius, bishop, who,
in the place “Placy” on the river Vicennonia, where he had
himself built a church with his own hands and gathered monks
for the service of God, departed to the Lord.
4.
In the monastery of Llanilltud Fawr in Wales, called
by his name, Saint Illtud, abbot, who founded the
same monastery, in which, by the fame of his holiness and
exceptional learning, he gathered many disciples.
5.
At Noblat near Limoges in Aquitaine, Saint Leonard, hermit.
6.
At Jerusalem, the holy martyrs Callinicus, Himerius,
Theodorus, Stephen, Peter, Paul, another Theodorus, John,
another John, and one of unknown name, who, soldiers,
when the city of Gaza was taken by the Saracens, were seized
by the enemy, but, encouraged by Saint Sophronius the bishop,
confessed Christ; therefore, having been beheaded, they
received martyrdom.

At Barcelona in Spain, Saint Severus, bishop, who
is said to have received the crown of martyrdom.

Among the Swiss in Burgundy, Saint Protasius, who
is venerated as bishop of Lausanne.

In the district of Thérouanne in Austrasia, Saint Winnoc,
abbot, who, of Breton stock, was received among the
monks of Sithiu by Saint Bertin, and afterward founded the
monastery of Wormhout, over which he presided in holiness,
working much with his own hands.

At Apt in Provence in Gallia, Saint Stephen, bishop,
renowned for gentleness, who undertook two pilgrimages to
Jerusalem and restored the cathedral church.

At Dorat in the district of Limoges in Aquitaine, Saint
Theobald, priest, who, a canon regular placed over the
office of the sacred threshold, never went forth from the
ecclesiastical precincts except to sit beside the sick and
to aid their needs.

Near Cologne in Lorraine in Germany, blessed Christina
of Stommeln, virgin, who, sharing in the sufferings
of Christ, wondrously overcame all the temptations of the

in Venetia, Saint Prosdocimus, who is believed to
have been the first bishop of this Church.

Saint Gregory Thaumaturgus, who advanced so much in divine
eloquence that, although young, he was judged worthy to
exercise the episcopal office.
3. At Albia
in Aquitaine, the commemoration of Saint Amaranthus,
martyr.
4. At Melitene
in Armenia, the holy martyrs Hiero and many companions.
5. At Perugia
in Umbria, Saint Herculanus, bishop and martyr, who,
by order of Totila, king of the Goths, was beheaded.

in Neustria, Saint Baldus, bishop, who in almsgiving
distributed to the poor the gold which his predecessor had
left.

place afterward called Congresbury in England, Saint
Congar, abbot, of Breton origin, after whom many villages
and churches boast to be named.

in Burgundy, the commemoration of Saint Florentius, bishop,
who succeeded Saint Arbogastus.

in Austrasia, the deposition of Saint Willibrord,
who, of English birth, was ordained bishop of Utrecht by
Saint Sergius, pope, and preached the Gospel in Frisia and
Denmark, and founded episcopal sees as well as monasteries,
until, worn out by labor and overcome with age, he fell
asleep in the Lord in the monastery he himself had founded.
10. On Mount
Galesius near Ephesus in Asia, Saint Lazarus, stylite,
who lived for many years in various places atop a column,
burdened also with heavy irons and chains, content with
only bread and water, by which most austere manner of life
he drew many of the faithful.

in Lorraine in Germany, Saint Engelbert, bishop,
who, for the defense of justice and the liberty of the Church,
was intercepted on the road by assassins and struck down
with many wounds, and died.

village of Pofi in Latium, blessed Antony Baldinucci,
priest of the Society of Jesus, who gave himself entirely
to preaching missions to the people.

city of Kẻt Chợ in Tonkin, the holy martyrs Hyacinth
Castaneda and Vincent Lê Quang Liêm, priests of the
Order of Preachers, who, under the rule of Trinh Sam, brought
to completion their evangelical labors by the shedding of
their blood.

place Zunyi in the province of Guizhou in China,
Saint Peter Wu Guosheng, catechist and martyr, who
was strangled for Christ.

in Italy, blessed Vincent Grossi, priest, who, while
carrying out the parish ministry, founded the Institute

This Day, the Eighth Day of
November
1. Commemoration
of the saints Simpronian, Claudius, Nicostratus, Castorius,
and Simplicius, martyrs, who, as it is related, being
marble workers at Sirmium in Pannonia, when they refused
to carve an image of the god Aesculapius because of the
name of Jesus Christ, were ordered by Emperor Diocletian
to be thrown headlong into the river, and were crowned by
God with the grace of martyrdom; whose veneration at Rome
under the title of the Four Crowned Martyrs has flourished
from ancient times in the basilica on the Caelian Hill.
2.
At Tours in Gallia Lugdunensis, Saint Clarus, priest,
who, a disciple of Saint Martin, established a dwelling
for himself near the bishop’s monastery, where he gathered
many brothers.
3.
At Rome near Saint Peter’s, Saint Deusdedit, pope,
who loved his clergy and people, renowned for simplicity
and wisdom.
4.
At Bremen in Saxony, Saint Willehad, bishop, who,
born in Northumbria and a friend of Alcuin, after Saint
Boniface spread the Gospel in Frisia and Saxony, and, having
been ordained bishop, established the see of Bremen and
governed it wisely.
5.
At Soissons in France, the deposition of Saint Godefroid,
bishop of Amiens, who, formed for the monastic life
from the age of fifteen, endured many hardships in settling
disputes between the lords and the people of the city and
in reforming the morals of clergy and people.

At Cologne in Lorraine in Germany, blessed John Duns
Scotus, priest of the Order of Minors, who, born in
Scotland, taught the disciplines of philosophy and theology
at Canterbury, Oxford, Paris, and finally at Cologne, a
distinguished teacher for the subtlety of his mind and his
marvelous fervor.

(Elizabeth Mary) Satellico, abbess of the Order of Poor
Clares, conspicuous in the contemplation of the mystery
of the Cross and endowed with mystical gifts.

Joseph Nguyễn Đình Nghi, Paul Nguyễn Ngân, Martin Tạ Dừc

Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica,
in honor of Christ the Savior, built by Emperor Constantine
as the seat of the bishops of the Romans, whose anniversary
celebration in the whole Latin Church stands as a sign of
love and unity with the Roman Pontiff.

bishop, who announced Christ the Lord to the people
and, for the believers, who were especially from among the
poor, made the house of Leocadius, a senator of Gaul, still
a pagan, into a church.

At Naples in Campania, Saint Agrippinus, one of the earliest
bishops, whom ancient monuments declare to have been
a defender of the city.

At Verdun in Gallia Belgica, Saint Vitonus, bishop.

martyr, who worked marvelously both in clandestine ministry
and in prison, that he might win souls for Christ in the
Church, and under King James I, on account of the priesthood,
merited to receive the crown of martyrdom.

At Dijon in France, blessed Elizabeth of the Most Holy
Trinity Catez, virgin of the Order of Discalced Carmelites,
who from childhood strove to seek and contemplate the Trinity
in the depths of her heart, and still young, afflicted with
many sufferings, went “to love, to light, to life,” as she
had wished.

In the town of Borysów in Poland, blessed Henry
Hlebowicz, priest and martyr, who, during wartime, was
killed by bullets in hatred of the faith.

At Rome, blessed Luigi Beltrame Quattrocchi, who,
a father of a family, in both public and domestic
duties observed the commands of Christ and proclaimed them
by diligence and uprightness of life.

November
Memorial of Saint Leo the First, pope, Doctor of the Church,
who, born in Etruria, first served diligently as deacon
of the City, then, having been raised to the chair of Peter,
deserved to be called “the Great,” either on account of
having nourished his flock with exquisite and prudent speech,
or for the orthodox doctrine concerning the Incarnation
of God, strongly affirmed through his legates in the Ecumenical
Council of Chalcedon, until he rested in the Lord at Rome,
where on this day he was buried at Saint Peter’s.
2.
In Persia, the passing of Saint Demetrian, bishop
of Antioch, who was deported into exile by King Sapor I.
3.
At Tyana in Cappadocia, Saint Orestes, martyr.
4.
At Ravenna in Flaminia, Saint Probus, bishop, to
whose name Saint Maximian the bishop dedicated the famous
basilica of Classe.
5.
In Persia, the holy martyrs Narses, bishop, a venerable
old man, and Joseph, his disciple, a young man, who,
when they had refused, though commanded by King Sapor II,
to worship the sun, were beheaded with the sword.

At Canterbury in England, Saint Justus, bishop, who,
together with other monks, was sent by Saint Gregory the
Great, pope, to help Saint Augustine in evangelizing England,
and at length received the episcopate of this see.
7. In the village of
Foro in the Subalpine region, Saint Baudolinus, hermit.

At Naples in Campania, Saint Andrew Avellino, priest
of the Congregation of Clerics Regular, celebrated for holiness
and zeal in procuring the salvation of his neighbor, who
took upon himself the difficult vow to make progress daily
in virtue, and, laden with merits, at the feet of the altar
fell asleep in a holy death.

At Barcelona in Spain, blessed Acisclus Pina Piazuelo,
religious of the Order of Saint John of God and martyr,
who, when the storm of persecution raged, was killed in
hatred of religion.

This Day, the Eleventh Day of
November
Memorial of Saint Martin, bishop,
on the day of his burial; who, born in Pannonia of pagan
parents and called to serve under the standards in Gaul,
while still a catechumen, clothed Christ in his own cloak
for [under the guise of] a poor man; after receiving baptism,
he left the army and at Ligugé led a monastic life in a
monastery founded by himself, under the guidance of Saint
Hilary of Poitiers; then, having been ordained to the priesthood
and elected bishop of Tours, showing forth the example of
the good shepherd, he founded other monasteries and parishes
in the villages, instructed the clergy and reconciled them,
evangelized the country folk, until at Candes he departed
to the Lord.

At Vence in Provence in Gaul, the commemoration of Saint
Veranus, bishop, who, the son of Saint Eucherius, bishop
of Lyon, having been brought up in the monastery of Lérins,
wrote letters to Saint Leo the Great, pope, giving thanks
for the faith in the Word Incarnate expressed in his letter
to Flavian.

In the province of Samnium, the commemoration of Saint
Menas, hermit, whose virtues Pope Saint Gregory the
Great records.

At Amathus on the island of Cyprus, the passing of Saint
John the Almsgiver, bishop of Alexandria, renowned for
his mercy toward the poor, who, filled with charity toward
all, took care to have many churches, hospitals, and orphanages
built, and with the greatest solicitude strove to relieve
all the misery of the city, applying to this very work the
goods of the Church and constantly urging the wealthy to
give alms.

In the monastery of Malonne in Brabant, Saint Bertuin,
who is venerated as bishop and abbot.
7.
At Constantinople, Saint Theodore the Studite, abbot,
who made his monastery a school of the wise, of the saints,
and of martyrs, who fell victim in the persecutions carried
out by the iconoclasts; three times driven into exile, he
held the traditions of the Fathers of the Church in great
honor and wrote celebrated expositions of Christian doctrine
for the explanation of the Catholic faith.

In the monastery of Grottaferrata in the Tusculan district
near Rome, Saint Bartholomew, abbot, who, born in
Calabria, came to Saint Nilus, whose life he soon wrote,
and was present to him, already near death, in founding
the Tusculan monastery under the ascetical discipline of
the Orientals, which he strengthened by his own governance
and made a school of knowledge and art.

At Nagasaki in Japan, Saint Marina of Omura, virgin and
martyr, who, having been thrown into prison, was subjected
in public to the mockery of her chastity and at last was
burned with fire.
10.
In the town of Łaski Piasnica near the city of
Wejherowo in Poland, blessed Alice Kotowska, virgin
of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Resurrection of
the Lord and martyr, who, in war, for having steadfastly
kept the faith of Christ, was killed by bullets.
11.
At Sofia in Bulgaria, the passion of blessed Vincent
Eugene Bossilkov, bishop of Nicopolis and martyr,
of the Congregation of the Passion of Jesus, who, under
a tyrannical regime, when he refused to separate himself
from communion with Rome, was led to prison and cruelly
mistreated, and under the charge of treason was condemned
to death and killed by bullets.

November
Memorial of the passion of Saint Josaphat (John) Kuncewicz, bishop
of Polotsk of the Ruthenians and martyr, who, with steadfast
zeal, urged his flock toward Catholic unity, cherished with
pious love the Byzantine-Slavic rite, and at Vitebsk in
Belarus, then under the rule of Poland, was cruelly struck
down by a tumultuous mob opposed to him, and died for the
unity of the Church and the defense of Catholic truth.

At Ancyra in Galatia, Saint Nilus, abbot, who, regarded
as a disciple of Saint John Chrysostom, long presided over
a monastery, spreading ascetical teaching through his writings.
3.
On the island of Lismore in Scotland, Saint Macarius,
bishop, who, of Irish birth, is considered a disciple
of Saint Columba and founder of this Church.
4.
At Vienne in Burgundy, Saint Hesychius, bishop, who,
raised from senatorial rank to the dignity of bishop, had
as sons, born to him previously, Saint Apollinaris, bishop
of the Church of Valence, and Avitus, who succeeded him
in the see of Vienne.
5.
In the woodlands of the Rioja region near Berceo in Spain,
Saint Aemilian, priest, who, after a hermit and clerical
life, at length professed the monastic life, and was renowned
for generosity toward the poor and the spirit of prophecy.
6.
At Cologne in Austrasia, Saint Cunibert, bishop,
who, after barbarian invasions, renewed ecclesiastical life
in the city and throughout the district, and the piety of
the faithful.
7.

at night by robbers; with them is also commemorated Christian,

voice they accused the governor Firmilian, who was sacrificing
to the gods, of impiety, were beheaded.

At Aix-en-Provence in Gallia Narbonensis, Saint Mitrius,
who, although of servile condition, in Christ departed from
the world free and a victor in righteousness.

At Tours in Gallia Lugdunensis, Saint Brictius, bishop,
who, a disciple of Saint Martin, succeeded his master and
for forty-seven years was many times afflicted by adversities.

In Africa, the commemoration of the holy Spanish martyrs
Arcadius, Paschasius, Probus, and Eutychius, who, since
they would in no way allow themselves to be turned aside
into the Arian heresy, were first proscribed by Gaiseric,
king of the Vandals, then driven into exile, cruelly tortured
with savage punishments, and finally killed by different
kinds of death. At the same time the constancy
of the little boy Paulillus, brother of Paschasius and Eutychius,
shone forth, who, since he could not be torn away from the
Catholic faith, was for a long time beaten with clubs and
condemned to the lowest servitude.

unwillingly he received the see of Regensburg, striving

Saint Margaret, who, born in Hungary and married to King Malcolm
III of Scotland, bore eight children, and was greatly concerned
for the good of the kingdom and of the Church, joining prayer
and fasting to generosity toward the poor, thus giving an
example of the best of wives, mothers, and queens.
Saint Gertrude, called “the Great,” virgin,
who, from childhood devoted with the greatest fervor and
energy to solitude and the study of letters, having been
wholly turned toward God, entered the Cistercian monastery
of Helfta near Eisleben in Saxony, Germany, where in a wondrous
manner she hastened along the way of perfection, devoting
herself to prayers and to the contemplation of Christ crucified.
Her passing occurred on the day after this day.

At Capua in Campania, Saints Augustine and Felicitas,
martyrs, who are said to have suffered under Emperor
Decius.
4.
At Déols in the territory of Bourges in France, the commemoration
of Saints Leocadius and Lusorius, of whom the former,
a senator of Gaul still a pagan, welcomed the first heralds
of the Christian faith among the Bituriges and made his
house in this village into a church; the latter, his son,
is said to have departed from the world clothed in the white
garments of a neophyte.

Likewise at Lyon in France, Saint Eucherius, who,
from senatorial rank, together with his family, first withdrew
to the neighboring island of Lérins to live an ascetic life;
then, having been elected bishop of Lyon, wrote very
many accounts of the passions of the holy martyrs.

Among the Swiss, Saint Othmar, abbot, who, at the
site of the cell founded by Saint Gall, established a small
hospital for lepers and a monastery under the observance
of the Rule of Saint Benedict; on account of defending its
rights, he was soon deported by neighboring powers into
exile on an island of the Rhine, where he died.

who, while still a young girl, was married to Louis, Count
of Thuringia, to whom she bore three children; having become
a widow, after having bravely endured great hardships, and
already long intent on the meditation of heavenly things,
she withdrew to the hospital in Marburg, Germany, which
she had founded, embracing poverty and devoting herself
to the care of the sick and the poor until her very last
breath, died in the twenty-fifth year of her age.

At Neocaesarea in Pontus, Saint Gregory, bishop,
who, as a young man, embraced the Christian faith, and,
having advanced both in human and divine knowledge, was
ordained bishop, renowned for his teaching, virtues, and
apostolic labors, and, on account of the many signs wrought
by him, was called Thaumaturgus [Wonder-worker].

see, gave outstanding service both in defending the liberties
of the Church and in rescuing Jews from the hands of their

Halicz, after the death of her husband King Coloman, professed
the Rule of the Poor Clares and fulfilled with holiness
the office of abbess in the monastery founded by

Loup-Sebastien Hunot, priest of Sens and martyr,
who, in the time of the French upheaval, on account of the
priesthood, was confined in a plague-ship anchored in the

was finally overcome by fever and completed his martyrdom.

Ukraine, blessed Josaphat Kocylovskyj, bishop of

of the Basilicas of Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles,
of which the former, built by the Emperor Constantine on
the Vatican Hill over the tomb of Saint Peter, having collapsed
through age, was restored in a larger form, and on this
same recurring day was again consecrated; but the latter,
on the Ostian Way, built by the Emperors Theodosius and
Valentinian, afterwards consumed by a wretched fire and
entirely rebuilt, was dedicated on the tenth day of December.
By their common commemoration, the brotherhood of the Apostles
and the unity of the Church are in some way signified.

At Antioch in Syria, Saint Romanus, martyr, who,
a deacon of the Church of Caesarea, when in the persecution
of the Emperor Diocletian he saw Christians obeying the
norms of the decrees and hastening to the images of idols,
and had called them with a free voice to resist, after dreadful
tortures and the cutting out of his tongue, was strangled
in prison with a rope, and was crowned with a celebrated
martyrdom.

by order of Ardisag the high magus, was arrested and beaten
with cudgels with such great severity three times that the
executioners, thinking him already dead, left him lying

by Christians to his own home, where he breathed his last.

who, the third after blessed Peter the Apostle, governed
the Roman Church and wrote to the Corinthians a remarkable
letter for the strengthening of peace and concord among
them. On this day the deposition of his body is celebrated
at Rome.
Saint
Columban, abbot,
who, an Irishman by birth, becoming a pilgrim for Christ
to teach the peoples of Gaul in the Gospel, founded Luxeuil
along with many other monasteries, which he himself governed
with strict discipline; then, forced into exile, he crossed
the Alps and founded the monastery of Bobbio in Liguria,
celebrated for discipline and studies, where, having greatly
merited of the Church, he died in peace, and on this day
his body was laid to rest.

widow, stripped of her goods for the faith and cast
into prison, was interrogated twelve times under questioning
and so afflicted with the punishment of beatings that, nearly
eighty years old, she died in prison.

village of Guadalupe in the territory of Zacatecas in Mexico,
blessed Miguel Agustín Pro, priest of the Society
of Jesus and martyr, who, during the persecution
against the Church, condemned to death without trial as
an accomplice in a crime, fulfilled the martyrdom which
was his burning desire.

in Spain, blessed Maria Cecilia (Maria Felicidad) Cendoya
y Araquistain, virgin of the Order of the Visitation

martyrs are honored in the regions of Tonkin, Annam,

bishops, very many priests, and a vast multitude of lay
Christian faithful of both sexes and of every condition
and age, all of whom preferred to suffer exiles, prisons,
tortures, and finally the most extreme punishments rather
than to trample on the cross and fall away from the Christian
faith.

martyr, who at Rome is celebrated on the anniversary

Catherine, who is said to have been a virgin

filled not less with sharpness of intellect and wisdom than
with strength of spirit. Her body is venerated with pious
devotion in the celebrated monastery on Mount Sinai.

in Cappadocia, Saint Mercury, martyr.
3. At Rome,
the commemoration of Saint Moses, priest and martyr,
who, after Saint Fabian the pope had been killed under the
emperor Decius, together with the college of presbyters
took care of the brethren in the Church; he judged that
peace should be granted to the lapsed, the weak, and those
at the point of death, and, having been kept for a long
time in prison, often consoled them through the letters
of Saint Cyprian of Carthage, and was crowned with an extraordinary
and admirable martyrdom.
4. At Alexandria
in Egypt, Saint Peter, bishop and martyr, who, adorned
with every virtue, was suddenly, by order of the emperor
Galerius Maximian, beheaded, and became the last victim
of the great persecution and the seal of the martyrs.
With him are commemorated three Egyptian bishops, namely
Hesychius, Pachomius, and Theodorus, with many others,
who likewise at Alexandria, in the same persecution, suffered,
and were carried to heaven by the cruel sword.

time of the emperor Constans, was hurled from a rock by

which he also confirmed with apostolic authority.

At Hadrianopolis in Paphlagonia, Saint Alypius, deacon
and stylite, who died nearly a hundred years old.
3.
At Constance in Swabia of Germany, Saint Conrad, bishop,
who, an excellent shepherd of his flock, generously provided
from his own means for the Church and for the poor.

At Lacedaemon in the Peloponnesus, Saint Nikon, monk,
who, after living the cenobitic and eremitical life in Asia,
devoted himself, after the island of Crete was freed from
the yoke of the Saracens, to restoring Christians to their
morals with evangelical zeal; then, traveling through Greece
preaching penance, he died in the Spartan monastery which
he had founded.

blessed Pontius of Faucigny, who, formerly abbot
of Abondance, having laid down the office, wished to die

had died shortly before, he understood all the vanity of
the world, withdrew into the desert, and, having changed

then sent into exile to Rome. There, after enduring and
overcoming further cruel torments, he converted the tyrant
Gratian to the faith, and, having been beheaded, received
the crown of martyrdom.

At Toulouse in Narbonnensian Gaul, the commemoration
of Saint Saturninus, bishop and martyr, who, as it is
said, in the time of the same Decius, was seized by pagans
in the Capitol of this city and thrown from the top of the
citadel down the steps, so that, with his head dashed and
his whole body torn, he gave back his soul to Christ.

of Discalced Carmelites, who, first reduced to slavery by

arrows and the sword.

At Lucera in Apulia, Saint Francis Anthony Fasani, priest
of the Order of Conventual Friars Minor, who, a man of exquisite
learning, greatly supported by zeal for preaching and penance,
cared for the poor and needy so much that he never hesitated
to take off his own garment to clothe a beggar, and offered
Christian help to all.

blessed Alfred Simon Colomina, priest of the Society
of Jesus and martyr, who, in the persecution against the
Church, confirmed his fidelity to the Lord with his blood.

Feast of Saint Andrew, Apostle,
who, born at Bethsaida, the brother of Simon Peter and with
him a fisherman, was the first of the disciples of John
the Baptist to be called by the Lord Jesus at the Jordan.
He followed Him and even brought his brother to Him.
After Pentecost, he is said to have preached the Gospel
in Achaia and at Patras to have been affixed to the cross.
The Church of Constantinople holds him in special honor
as a most eminent patron.

Saint Ambrose mentions among his faithful predecessors in
the episcopate.

In Brittany, Saint Tugdual, surnamed Pabu, abbot
and bishop, who founded a monastery in the region of

At Mount Siepi in Etruria, Saint Galganus Guidotti, hermit,
who, after a dissipated youth, converted to God and spent
the rest of his life in voluntary bodily penance.

At Montpellier in Provence of Gaul, blessed John of Vercelli
Garbella, priest, who, as Master General of the Order
of Preachers, earnestly preached reverence for the name
of Jesus.

At Regensburg in Bavaria of Germany, blessed Frederick,
religious of the Order of Hermits of Saint Augustine,
who, a skilled carpenter, excelled in fervor for prayer,
obedience, and charity.

At St. Stephen-in-the-Fields in England, Saint Cuthbert
Mayne, priest and martyr, who, having embraced the Catholic
faith and been ordained priest, exercised his ministry in
Cornwall until, under Queen Elizabeth the First, he was
condemned to death because he had made Apostolic Letters
public property, and was given over to the punishment of
the gallows — the first of the alumni of the English
College at Douai.

At York likewise in England, blessed Alexander Crow,
priest and martyr, who, from a humble shoemaker became
a priest, and under the same queen, because of the priesthood,
gloriously completed the course of his martyrdom on the
gallows.

In the place Quxian in the province of Sichuan
in China, Saint Thaddeus Liu Ruiting, priest and martyr,
who was strangled out of hatred for the faith.

At Hué in Annam [Vietnam], Saint Joseph Marchand, priest
of the Paris Foreign Mission Society and martyr,
who, under the emperor Minh Mạng, was condemned to the punishment
of one hundred blows.

In the place Paracuellos del Jarama near Madrid in
Spain, the blessed Michael Ruedas Megías and six companions,8
martyrs, religious of the Order of Saint John
of God, outstanding in the confession of Christ, who, renowned
for their confession [of faith], while the persecution was
raging, by the violence of the enemies of the Church departed
to the Lord

Likewise at Valencia in Spain, blessed Joseph Otin Aquile,
priest of the Salesian Society and martyr, who,
in the same time, undefeated in the constancy of faith,
came to the heavenly kingdom.

Near Munich in Bavaria of Germany, in the internment camp
of Dachau, blessed Louis Roch Gientyngier, priest and
martyr, who, during the occupation of Poland in the
war, in crimes perpetrated by the regime hostile to the
faith, afflicted with torments, gave up his spirit.
