This Day, the First Day of November 

Solemnity of All Saints who are with Christ in glory, on which, under a single joy of festivity, the holy Church on earth, still a pilgrim, venerates the memory of those whose fellowship makes heaven rejoice, so that she may be stirred by their example, gladdened by their patronage, and crowned in their triumph before the divine majesty unto eternal ages.

 

2.  At Terracina on the coast of Latium, Saint Caesarius, martyr.

 

3.  At Dijon in Lugdunensian Gaul, Saint Benignus, who is venerated as a priest and martyr.

 

4.  At Clermont in Aquitaine, Saint Austremonius, bishop, who is said to have preached the word of salvation in that city.

 

5.  At Paris in Lugdunensian Gaul, Saint Marcellus, bishop.

 

6.  In the district of Bourges in Aquitaine, Saint Romulus, priest and abbot.

 

7.  At Tivoli in Latium, Saint Severinus, monk.

13.  At Città della Pieve in Umbria, blessed Rainerius of Arezzo, religious of the Order of Friars Minor, who was filled with humility, poverty, and patience.

 

14.  At Lisbon in Lusitania, blessed Nuno Álvares Pereira, who, first placed in charge of the defense of the kingdom, was later received among the lay brothers in the Order of Carmelites, and lived a poor and hidden life in Christ.

 

15.  At Shimabara in Japan, the blessed martyrs Peter Paul Navarro, priest, Denis Fujishima, and Peter Onizuka Sandayu, religious, of the Society of Jesus, and Clement Kyuemon, who were burned to death out of hatred for the Christian faith.

 

16.  In the city of Hải Dương in Tonkin [Vietnam], the holy martyrs Jerome Hermosilla and Valentine Berrio Ochoa, bishops, and Peter Almato Ribera, priest, of the Order of Preachers, who, by order of the emperor Tự Đức, were beheaded.

 

17.  At Munich in Bavaria, Germany, blessed Rupert Mayer, priest of the Society of Jesus, who, a most devoted guide of the faithful, helper of the poor and workers, and preacher of the word of God, endured persecutions under the nefarious Nazi regime—first being deported to a detention camp, and afterward confined in a monastery without any further contact with the faithful.

 

18.  In the town of Mukachevo in Ukraine, blessed Theodore George Romzsa, bishop and martyr, who, in a time of repression of the faith, for his unwearied fidelity toward the Church, merited to attain the glorious palm.

 

 


 

November 2nd

 

This Day, the Second Day of November

Commemoration of all the faithful departed, on which the loving Mother Church, already intent on offering fitting praises for all her children rejoicing in Heaven, strives to intercede with God for all the souls who have gone before us with the sign of faith and sleep in the hope of the Resurrection, as well as for all from the beginning of the world whose faith is known to the Lord alone, that, having been purified from the contagion of sin and admitted to the company of the citizens above, they may be able to rejoice in the vision of eternal blessedness.

 

2.  Commemoration of Saint Victorinus, bishop of Poetovio in Pannonia, who wrote many works for the explanation of the books of Sacred Scripture and, in the persecution of the emperor Diocletian, was crowned with martyrdom.

 

3.  At Trieste in Histria, Saint Justus, martyr.

 

4.  At Sebaste in Armenia, the holy martyrs Carterius, Styriacus, Tobias, Eudoxius, Agapius, and their companions, who, under the emperor Licinius, being soldiers and remaining steadfast in the faith of Christ, are said to have been thrown into the flames.

 

5.  In Persia, the holy martyrs Acindynus, Pegasius, Aphtonius, Elpidephorus, Anempodistus, and many companions, who are said to have suffered under King Shapur II.

 

6.  At Vienne in Lugdunensian Gaul [the region of Lyon in France], Saint Domninus, bishop, who devoted himself to ransoming captives.

 

7.  Commemoration of Saint Marcian, hermit, who, born at Cyrrhus, withdrew to the Chalcedonian desert, where, dwelling in a very small hut, he used only a little bread and water in the evening, yet preferred fraternal charity to fasting.

 

8.  In the monastery of Agaunum among the Swiss, Saint Ambrose, abbot, who, first abbot of the monastery of the island of Barbe near Lyon, was transferred there because of his outstanding religious observance and established there the practice of perpetual praise.

 

9.  At the spring in the place called Holywell in Wales, Saint Winefride, virgin, who is venerated as an outstanding nun.

 

10.  At Vienne in Burgundy, Saint George, bishop.

 

11.  In the monastery of Clairvaux in Burgundy, the deposition of Saint Malachy, bishop of Down and Connor in Ireland, who restored the life of the Church there, and, while traveling to Rome, at Clairvaux, in the presence of Saint Bernard the abbot, gave up his spirit.

 

12.  At Mortain in Normandy, France, blessed Margaret of Lorraine, who, formerly Duchess of Alençon, when widowed, lived a religious life in the monastery of the Poor Clares, which she had rebuilt.

 

13.  At Andover in the county of Hampshire in England, blessed John Bodey, martyr, who, a schoolmaster, for refusing the primacy of Queen Elizabeth I in spiritual matters, was hanged and disemboweled.

 

14.  At Casale in the region of Romagna, Italy, blessed Pius of Saint Aloysius (Aloysius Campidelli), religious of the Congregation of the Passion, who, as a young man, stricken with a violent illness, fully consented to the divine will.

 

 


 

November 3rd

 

This Day, the Third Day of November

Saint Martin de Porres, religious of the Order of Preachers, who, born of a Spanish man and a black woman, already from boyhood, although passing through hardships arising from the condition of being the illegitimate and mixed-race son, learned the art of medicine, which afterwards, having become a religious, he generously practiced at Lima in Peru for the poor, and, given to fasting, penance, and prayer, he led a harsh and humble life, radiant with charity.

 

2.  At Caesarea in Cappadocia, the holy martyrs Germanus, Theophilus, and Cyril.

 

3.  At Agrigento in Sicily, Saint Libertinus, bishop and martyr.

 

4.  In the district of Laureacum in Narbonese Gaul, Saint Papulus, who is venerated as a martyr.

 

5.  At Viterbo in Tuscany, the holy martyrs Valentine, priest, and Hilary, deacon.

 

6.  In Brittany, Saint Guenael, held to have been abbot of Landévennec.

 

7.  At Rome, the commemoration of Saint Silvia, mother of Pope Saint Gregory the Great, whom the Pontiff himself wrote had attained the summit of prayer and penance and had been to others a most high example.

 

8.  In the monastery of Hornbach near Strasbourg in Burgundy, the deposition of Saint Pirmin, bishop and abbot of Reichenau, who evangelized the Alemanni and the Bavarians, founded many monasteries, and composed for his disciples a book on catechizing the unlearned.

 

9.  In the monastery of Antidion in Bithynia, Saint Joannicius, monk, who, after more than twenty years in military service, having left the army, led a solitary life in the various passes of Olympus, being accustomed to accompany prayer with these words: “My hope is God, my refuge is Christ, my protector is the Holy Spirit.”

 

10.  At Alem in Flanders, the deposition of Saint Odrada, virgin.

 

11.  At Urgell in Catalonia of Spain, Saint Ermengaud, bishop, among the illustrious prelates who took care to restore the Church in the lands freed from the yoke of the Moors, who himself, putting forth his own hands and toil in rebuilding a bridge, having fallen down, with his skull shattered among the stones, he died.

 

12.  Among the Marsi in the Abruzzi, Saint Berard, bishop, who excelled in rooting out simony, restoring the discipline of the clergy, and sustaining and protecting the poor.

 

13.  At Cudot in the district of Sens in Gaul, blessed Alpais, virgin, who, as a young girl grievously stricken and abandoned by her own, lived enclosed in a cell until old age.

 

14.  Near the monastery of Fischingen among the Swiss, Saint Ida, recluse.

 

15.  At Rimini on the Flaminian coast, blessed Simon Ballachi, religious of the Order of Preachers, who chose a life wholly devoted to the service of the brethren, to penance, and to prayer.

 

16.  At Milan in Lombardy, the birthday of Saint Charles Borromeo, bishop, whose memory is celebrated tomorrow.

 

17.  At the fortress of Xã Đoài in Tonkin  [Vietnam], Saint Peter Francis Néron, priest of the Paris Society of Foreign Missions and martyr, who, under the emperor Tự Đức, was kept for three months thrust into a most narrow cage and, having been cruelly beaten with rods, abstained from all food for three weeks, and at length, his head having been cut off, consummated his martyrdom.

 

 


 

November 4th

 

This Day, the Fourth Day of November

Memorial of Saint Charles Borromeo, bishop, who, having been enrolled among the cardinals by his uncle Pope Pius IV and elected Bishop of Milan, was in that see a true shepherd, attentive to the needs of the Church of his time: to form the clergy he gathered synods and established seminaries; to foster Christian morals he visited the whole flock many times and decreed many things for the salvation of souls.  He departed for his heavenly homeland on the day before this day.

 

2.  At Bologna in Emilia, the holy martyrs Vitalis and Agricola, of whom, as Saint Ambrose relates, the former was once the servant of the other, then his companion and fellow in martyrdom: for this one endured every kind of torture in such manner that there was no place on his body without a wound; but the other, not terrified by the punishment of his servant, being affixed to a cross, imitated his martyrdom.

 

3.  At Myra in Lycia, the holy martyrs Nicander, bishop, and Hermes, priest.

 

4.  Commemoration of Saint Pierius, priest of Alexandria, who, illustrious in philosophical teachings but more distinguished for integrity of life and voluntary poverty, while Theonas was governing the Church of Alexandria, taught the people the divine Scriptures thoroughly, and after the persecution rested in peace at Rome.

 

5.  At Rodez in Aquitaine, Saint Amantius, bishop, who is believed to have been the first prelate of this city.

 

6.  At Maastricht in Brabant of Austrasia, Saint Perpetuus, bishop.

 

7.  At Trier in Austrasia, Saint Modesta, abbess, who, consecrated to God from her very infancy, presided worthily over the flock of nuns of the monastery of Oeren in the same city, and was united in the highest intimacy in God with Saint Gertrude of Nivelles.

 

8.  At Székesfehérvár in Pannonia, Saint Emeric, or Henry, son of Saint Stephen, King of the Hungarians, who was overtaken by an untimely death.

 

9.  At Padua in Venetia, blessed Helen Enselmini, virgin of the Order of Poor Clares, who bore many pains and even the loss of speech with wondrous patience.

 

10.  At Cerfroid in the territory of Meaux in France, Saint Felix of Valois, who, after he had led a solitary life for a long time, is held to have been the companion of Saint John of Matha in founding the Order of the Most Holy Trinity for the Redemption of Captives.

 

11.  In the convent of the Scots at Nantes in France, blessed Frances d’Amboise, who, Duchess of Brittany, first founded at Vannes in France a convent of Carmelite nuns, into which, having been widowed, she withdrew as a handmaid of Christ.

 

 


 

November 5th

 

This Day, the Fifth Day of November

1.  At Caesarea in Palestine, Saint Domninus, martyr, who, a young physician, at the beginning of the persecution of Emperor Diocletian, was condemned to the mines and banished to Phoenicia, where he endured cruel hardships; and, because he had firmly kept his confession, in the fifth year of the persecution, by order of the governor Urban, was commanded to be consigned to the fire.

 

2.  In the same place, the commemoration of the holy martyrs Theotimus, Philotheus, and Timothy, who, being young men, were assigned to the circus games for the amusement of the people, and of Saint Auxentius, an old man, who was handed over to the beasts.

 

3.  In Apulia, Saint Mark, bishop of Aeca.

 

4.  At Trier in Rhenish Austrasia, Saint Fibicius, bishop.

 

5.  In Brittany, Saint Guethnoc, who is held in honor as the brother of the saints Winwaloeus and Jacut.

 

6.  In the monastery of Chelles near Meaux in Gallia Lugdunensis, Saint Bertilla, first abbess.

 

7.  At Béziers in Gallia Narbonensis, Saint Gerald, bishop, a man of wondrous uprightness and simplicity, who, though unwillingly taken from being a canon regular to the episcopate, in his dignity was all the more committed to humility.

 

8.  At Constantinople, blessed Gomidas Keumurgian (Cosmas of Carbonianus), priest and martyr, who, a head of a family, born and ordained in the Church of the Armenians, for the Catholic faith professed by the Council of Chalcedon, which he firmly held and spread, suffered many things, and finally, while reciting the Nicene Creed, fell by beheading.

 

9.  Near the river Hưng Yên in Tonkin, Saint Dominic Mậu, priest of the Order of Preachers and martyr, who, in the persecution of Emperor Tự Đức, publicly carrying the Rosary and exhorting Christians to the profession of faith, was led to the punishment of beheading, with hands joined as if at the altar, for Christ.

 

10.  At Parma in Italy, blessed Guido Maria Conforti, bishop, who, a good shepherd, always watched for the defense of the Church and the faith of the people, and, moved by zeal for the evangelization of peoples, founded the Pious Society of Saint Francis Xavier.

 

11.  At Madrid in Spain, blessed John Antony Burró Mas, religious of the Order of Saint John of God and martyr, killed in the persecution against the Church because of his evangelical profession.

 

12.  In the place called El Saler near Valencia likewise in Spain, blessed Mary of Mount Carmel Viel Ferrando, virgin and martyr, who in the same time of persecution fought an outstanding contest for Christ.

 

13.  In the town of Hof in Germany, blessed Bernard Lichtenberg, priest and martyr, who, when the dignity of God and of men was being violated, publicly prayed for the Jews who were inhumanly harassed and detained; for which reason he himself was arrested and sent to the concentration camp of Dachau, and on the way, overwhelmed by hardships, yet fearless in Christ, died.

 

14.  In the concentration camp of the city of Abé in the Siberian province of Russia, blessed Gregory Lakota, bishop of Przemyśl and martyr, who, when his homeland was oppressed by persecutors of the faith, overcame the torments of the body with a fearless death for Christ.

 

 


 

November 6rth

 

This Day, the Sixth Day of November

1.  At Thinis in Numidia, Saint Felix, martyr, of whom Saint Augustine is thought to speak to the people, saying: “Truly happy both in name and in crown.  For he confessed, he was delayed to the torments; on the following day his lifeless body was found in prison.”

 

2.  Commemoration of Saint Paul, bishop of Constantinople and martyr, who was often driven out by the Arians because he had kept the Nicene faith, and more than once restored to his office; at length, banished by Emperor Constantius to Cucusus, a small town of Cappadocia, there, by the treachery of the Arians, he is said to have been cruelly strangled.

 

3.  At Rennes in Brittany, Saint Melanius, bishop, who, in the place “Placy” on the river Vicennonia, where he had himself built a church with his own hands and gathered monks for the service of God, departed to the Lord.

 

4.  In the monastery of Llanilltud Fawr in Wales, called by his name, Saint Illtud, abbot, who founded the same monastery, in which, by the fame of his holiness and exceptional learning, he gathered many disciples.

 

5.  At Noblat near Limoges in Aquitaine, Saint Leonard, hermit.

 

6.  At Jerusalem, the holy martyrs Callinicus, Himerius, Theodorus, Stephen, Peter, Paul, another Theodorus, John, another John, and one of unknown name, who, soldiers, when the city of Gaza was taken by the Saracens, were seized by the enemy, but, encouraged by Saint Sophronius the bishop, confessed Christ; therefore, having been beheaded, they received martyrdom.

 

7.  At Barcelona in Spain, Saint Severus, bishop, who is said to have received the crown of martyrdom.

 

8.  Among the Swiss in Burgundy, Saint Protasius, who is venerated as bishop of Lausanne.

 

9.  In the district of Thérouanne in Austrasia, Saint Winnoc, abbot, who, of Breton stock, was received among the monks of Sithiu by Saint Bertin, and afterward founded the monastery of Wormhout, over which he presided in holiness, working much with his own hands.

 

10.  At Apt in Provence in Gallia, Saint Stephen, bishop, renowned for gentleness, who undertook two pilgrimages to Jerusalem and restored the cathedral church.

 

11.  At Dorat in the district of Limoges in Aquitaine, Saint Theobald, priest, who, a canon regular placed over the office of the sacred threshold, never went forth from the ecclesiastical precincts except to sit beside the sick and to aid their needs.

 

12.  Near Cologne in Lorraine in Germany, blessed Christina of Stommeln, virgin, who, sharing in the sufferings of Christ, wondrously overcame all the temptations of the world.

 

 


 

November 7th

 

This Day, the Seventh Day of November

1.  At Padua in Venetia, Saint Prosdocimus, who is believed to have been the first bishop of this Church.

 

2.  At Neocaesarea in Pontus, Saint Athenodorus, bishop, brother of Saint Gregory Thaumaturgus, who advanced so much in divine eloquence that, although young, he was judged worthy to exercise the episcopal office.

 

3.  At Albia in Aquitaine, the commemoration of Saint Amaranthus, martyr.

 

4.  At Melitene in Armenia, the holy martyrs Hiero and many companions.

 

5.  At Perugia in Umbria, Saint Herculanus, bishop and martyr, who, by order of Totila, king of the Goths, was beheaded.

 

6.  At Tours in Neustria, Saint Baldus, bishop, who in almsgiving distributed to the poor the gold which his predecessor had left.

 

7.  In the place afterward called Congresbury in England, Saint Congar, abbot, of Breton origin, after whom many villages and churches boast to be named.

 

8.  At Strasbourg in Burgundy, the commemoration of Saint Florentius, bishop, who succeeded Saint Arbogastus.

 

9.  At Echternach in Austrasia, the deposition of Saint Willibrord, who, of English birth, was ordained bishop of Utrecht by Saint Sergius, pope, and preached the Gospel in Frisia and Denmark, and founded episcopal sees as well as monasteries, until, worn out by labor and overcome with age, he fell asleep in the Lord in the monastery he himself had founded.

 

10.  On Mount Galesius near Ephesus in Asia, Saint Lazarus, stylite, who lived for many years in various places atop a column, burdened also with heavy irons and chains, content with only bread and water, by which most austere manner of life he drew many of the faithful.

 

11.  At Cologne in Lorraine in Germany, Saint Engelbert, bishop, who, for the defense of justice and the liberty of the Church, was intercepted on the road by assassins and struck down with many wounds, and died.

 

12.  In the village of Pofi in Latium, blessed Antony Baldinucci, priest of the Society of Jesus, who gave himself entirely to preaching missions to the people.

 

13.  In the city of Kẻt Chợ in Tonkin, the holy martyrs Hyacinth Castaneda and Vincent Lê Quang Liêm, priests of the Order of Preachers, who, under the rule of Trinh Sam, brought to completion their evangelical labors by the shedding of their blood.

 

14.  In the place Zunyi in the province of Guizhou in China, Saint Peter Wu Guosheng, catechist and martyr, who was strangled for Christ.

 

15.  At Cremona in Italy, blessed Vincent Grossi, priest, who, while carrying out the parish ministry, founded the Institute of the Daughters of the Oratory.

 

 


 

November 8th

 

This Day, the Eighth Day of November

1.  Commemoration of the saints Simpronian, Claudius, Nicostratus, Castorius, and Simplicius, martyrs, who, as it is related, being marble workers at Sirmium in Pannonia, when they refused to carve an image of the god Aesculapius because of the name of Jesus Christ, were ordered by Emperor Diocletian to be thrown headlong into the river, and were crowned by God with the grace of martyrdom; whose veneration at Rome under the title of the Four Crowned Martyrs has flourished from ancient times in the basilica on the Caelian Hill.

 

2.  At Tours in Gallia Lugdunensis, Saint Clarus, priest, who, a disciple of Saint Martin, established a dwelling for himself near the bishop’s monastery, where he gathered many brothers.

 

3.  At Rome near Saint Peter’s, Saint Deusdedit, pope, who loved his clergy and people, renowned for simplicity and wisdom.

 

4.  At Bremen in Saxony, Saint Willehad, bishop, who, born in Northumbria and a friend of Alcuin, after Saint Boniface spread the Gospel in Frisia and Saxony, and, having been ordained bishop, established the see of Bremen and governed it wisely.

 

5.  At Soissons in France, the deposition of Saint Godefroid, bishop of Amiens, who, formed for the monastic life from the age of fifteen, endured many hardships in settling disputes between the lords and the people of the city and in reforming the morals of clergy and people.

 

6.  At Cologne in Lorraine in Germany, blessed John Duns Scotus, priest of the Order of Minors, who, born in Scotland, taught the disciplines of philosophy and theology at Canterbury, Oxford, Paris, and finally at Cologne, a distinguished teacher for the subtlety of his mind and his marvelous fervor.

 

7.  At Montegranaro in Piceno in Italy, blessed Mary Crucifixa (Elizabeth Mary) Satellico, abbess of the Order of Poor Clares, conspicuous in the contemplation of the mystery of the Cross and endowed with mystical gifts.

 

8.  In the city of Nam Định in Tonkin, the holy martyrs Joseph Nguyễn Đình Nghi, Paul Nguyễn Ngân, Martin Tạ Dừc Thịnh, priests, and Martin Thọ and John Baptist Cỏn, farmers, who, under Emperor Thiệu Trị, were beheaded for the Christian faith.

 

 


 

November 9th

 

This Day, the Ninth Day of November

Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, in honor of Christ the Savior, built by Emperor Constantine as the seat of the bishops of the Romans, whose anniversary celebration in the whole Latin Church stands as a sign of love and unity with the Roman Pontiff.

 

2.  At Bourges in France, Saint Ursinus, the first bishop, who announced Christ the Lord to the people and, for the believers, who were especially from among the poor, made the house of Leocadius, a senator of Gaul, still a pagan, into a church.

 

3.  At Naples in Campania, Saint Agrippinus, one of the earliest bishops, whom ancient monuments declare to have been a defender of the city.

Memorial of Saint Leo the First, pope, Doctor of the Church, who, born in Etruria, first served diligently as deacon of the City, then, having been raised to the chair of Peter, deserved to be called “the Great,” either on account of having nourished his flock with exquisite and prudent speech, or for the orthodox doctrine concerning the Incarnation of God, strongly affirmed through his legates in the Ecumenical Council of Chalcedon, until he rested in the Lord at Rome, where on this day he was buried at Saint Peter’s.

 

2.  In Persia, the passing of Saint Demetrian, bishop of Antioch, who was deported into exile by King Sapor I.

 

3.  At Tyana in Cappadocia, Saint Orestes, martyr.

 

4.  At Ravenna in Flaminia, Saint Probus, bishop, to whose name Saint Maximian the bishop dedicated the famous basilica of Classe.

Memorial of Saint Martin, bishop, on the day of his burial; who, born in Pannonia of pagan parents and called to serve under the standards in Gaul, while still a catechumen, clothed Christ in his own cloak for [under the guise of] a poor man; after receiving baptism, he left the army and at Ligugé led a monastic life in a monastery founded by himself, under the guidance of Saint Hilary of Poitiers; then, having been ordained to the priesthood and elected bishop of Tours, showing forth the example of the good shepherd, he founded other monasteries and parishes in the villages, instructed the clergy and reconciled them, evangelized the country folk, until at Candes he departed to the Lord.

3.  At Vence in Provence in Gaul, the commemoration of Saint Veranus, bishop, who, the son of Saint Eucherius, bishop of Lyon, having been brought up in the monastery of Lérins, wrote letters to Saint Leo the Great, pope, giving thanks for the faith in the Word Incarnate expressed in his letter to Flavian.

 

4.  In the province of Samnium, the commemoration of Saint Menas, hermit, whose virtues Pope Saint Gregory the Great records.

 

5.  At Amathus on the island of Cyprus, the passing of Saint John the Almsgiver, bishop of Alexandria, renowned for his mercy toward the poor, who, filled with charity toward all, took care to have many churches, hospitals, and orphanages built, and with the greatest solicitude strove to relieve all the misery of the city, applying to this very work the goods of the Church and constantly urging the wealthy to give alms.

 

6.  In the monastery of Malonne in Brabant, Saint Bertuin, who is venerated as bishop and abbot.

 

7.  At Constantinople, Saint Theodore the Studite, abbot, who made his monastery a school of the wise, of the saints, and of martyrs, who fell victim in the persecutions carried out by the iconoclasts; three times driven into exile, he held the traditions of the Fathers of the Church in great honor and wrote celebrated expositions of Christian doctrine for the explanation of the Catholic faith.

 

8.  In the monastery of Grottaferrata in the Tusculan district near Rome, Saint Bartholomew, abbot, who, born in Calabria, came to Saint Nilus, whose life he soon wrote, and was present to him, already near death, in founding the Tusculan monastery under the ascetical discipline of the Orientals, which he strengthened by his own governance and made a school of knowledge and art.

 

9.  At Nagasaki in Japan, Saint Marina of Omura, virgin and martyr, who, having been thrown into prison, was subjected in public to the mockery of her chastity and at last was burned with fire.

 

10.  In the town of Łaski Piasnica near the city of Wejherowo in Poland, blessed Alice Kotowska, virgin of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Resurrection of the Lord and martyr, who, in war, for having steadfastly kept the faith of Christ, was killed by bullets.

 

11.  At Sofia in Bulgaria, the passion of blessed Vincent Eugene Bossilkov, bishop of Nicopolis and martyr, of the Congregation of the Passion of Jesus, who, under a tyrannical regime, when he refused to separate himself from communion with Rome, was led to prison and cruelly mistreated, and under the charge of treason was condemned to death and killed by bullets.

This Day, the Twelfth Day of November

Memorial of the passion of Saint Josaphat (John) Kuncewicz, bishop of Polotsk of the Ruthenians and martyr, who, with steadfast zeal, urged his flock toward Catholic unity, cherished with pious love the Byzantine-Slavic rite, and at Vitebsk in Belarus, then under the rule of Poland, was cruelly struck down by a tumultuous mob opposed to him, and died for the unity of the Church and the defense of Catholic truth.

 

2.  At Ancyra in Galatia, Saint Nilus, abbot, who, regarded as a disciple of Saint John Chrysostom, long presided over a monastery, spreading ascetical teaching through his writings.

 

3.  On the island of Lismore in Scotland, Saint Macarius, bishop, who, of Irish birth, is considered a disciple of Saint Columba and founder of this Church.

 

4.  At Vienne in Burgundy, Saint Hesychius, bishop, who, raised from senatorial rank to the dignity of bishop, had as sons, born to him previously, Saint Apollinaris, bishop of the Church of Valence, and Avitus, who succeeded him in the see of Vienne.

 

5.  In the woodlands of the Rioja region near Berceo in Spain, Saint Aemilian, priest, who, after a hermit and clerical life, at length professed the monastic life, and was renowned for generosity toward the poor and the spirit of prophecy.

 

6.  At Cologne in Austrasia, Saint Cunibert, bishop, who, after barbarian invasions, renewed ecclesiastical life in the city and throughout the district, and the piety of the faithful.

 

7.  At Deventer in Frisia, Saint Lebuin, priest, who, coming as a monk from England, took care to announce to the inhabitants of the region the peace and salvation of Christ.

 

8.  At Kazimierz on the Vistula River in Poland, the holy martyrs Benedict, John, Matthew, and Isaac, who, sent to spread the Christian faith in parts of Poland, were murdered at night by robbers; with them is also commemorated Christian, their servant, who was hanged in the courtyard of the chapel.

 

9.  At Pisa in Etruria, blessed John Cini, called “of Peace,” who, from military life, devoted himself to the service of God in the Third Order of Saint Francis.

 

10.  At Alcalá in Spain, Saint Didacus, religious of the Order of Minors, who, both in the Canary Islands and at Rome in the monastery of Saint Mary in Ara Coeli, was renowned for humility and charity in caring for the sick.

 

11.  In the city of Tulimán in Mexico, Saint Margarito Flores, priest and martyr, who, in the great persecution against the Church, was arrested because of the priesthood and killed by bullets, crowned with a noble martyrdom.

1.  At Caesarea in Palestine, the passion of the holy martyrs Antoninus, Nicephorus, Zebina, Germanus, and Manatha, virgin.  She, under Emperor Galerius Maximian, was beaten with blows and burned with fire; but they, when with fearless and free voice they accused the governor Firmilian, who was sacrificing to the gods, of impiety, were beheaded.

 

2.  At Aix-en-Provence in Gallia Narbonensis, Saint Mitrius, who, although of servile condition, in Christ departed from the world free and a victor in righteousness.

 

3.  At Tours in Gallia Lugdunensis, Saint Brictius, bishop, who, a disciple of Saint Martin, succeeded his master and for forty-seven years was many times afflicted by adversities.

 

4.  In Africa, the commemoration of the holy Spanish martyrs Arcadius, Paschasius, Probus, and Eutychius, who, since they would in no way allow themselves to be turned aside into the Arian heresy, were first proscribed by Gaiseric, king of the Vandals, then driven into exile, cruelly tortured with savage punishments, and finally killed by different kinds of death.  At the same time the constancy of the little boy Paulillus, brother of Paschasius and Eutychius, shone forth, who, since he could not be torn away from the Catholic faith, was for a long time beaten with clubs and condemned to the lowest servitude.

 

5.  At Vienne in Gallia Lugdunensis, Saint Leonian, abbot, who, taken captive there from Pannonia by a hostile people, first at Autun, and soon after at Vienne, governed in the most holy manner for more than forty years monks and nuns

 

6.  At Clermont in Aquitaine, Saint Quinctian, bishop, who first held the see of Rodez, but driven into exile by the Goths, was made bishop of Clermont.

14.  At Ivrea in the Subalpine region, the commemoration of blessed Warmund, bishop, outstanding in living faith, piety, and humility, who defended the freedom of the Church from the plots of the powerful, built the cathedral church, promoted the monastic order, and advanced the episcopal school.

 

15.  At Cremona in Lombardy, Saint Homobonus, merchant, who was renowned for charity toward the poor, for gathering and educating abandoned children, and for reconciling families.

 

16.  At Rome, Saint Augustine (Livia) Pietrantoni, virgin of the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity, who devoted herself in a Christian spirit to caring for those suffering from tuberculosis in the Hospital of the Holy Spirit, until she was struck down with a knife by a patient seized with the fury of homicide and died.

 

17.  In the village of Simat de Valldigna in the district of Valencia in Spain, blessed John Gonga Martinez, martyr, who, when the persecution against the faith raged, poured out his blood for Christ.

 

18.  In the village of Portichol de Tavernes near Carcaixent in the same district of Spain, blessed Mary of the Patronage of Saint John Giner Gomis, virgin of the Institute of the Claretian Missionary Sisters of Mary Immaculate and martyr, who in the same persecution, through the contest of faith, received eternal life.

3.  At Avignon in Provence, Saint Rufus, who is considered the first leader of the Christian community of this place.

 

4.  On the island of Bardsey off the northern coast of Wales, Saint Dubricius, bishop and abbot.

 

5.  At Trogir in Dalmatia, Saint John, bishop, who, from being a hermit in the Camaldolese monastery of Osor, was ordained to the episcopal office, and successfully defended the city from destruction by King Coloman.

 

6.  At Eu in Normandy, the passing of Saint Lawrence O’Toole (Lorcan Ua Tuathail), bishop of Dublin, who, in the difficulties of his time, vigorously promoted the regular discipline of the Church and strove to reconcile concord between princes; at length, going to meet King Henry of England, he himself attained the joys of eternal peace.

 

7.  In the monastery of Saint Mary of Gualdo Mazzocca near Campobasso in Italy, blessed John of Tufara, hermit.

 

8.  At Mariëngaarde in Frisia, Saint Siard, abbot of the Order of Premonstratensians, who was distinguished for regular observance and generosity toward the poor.

 

9.  At Algiers in North Africa, Saint Serapion, who was the first of the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy to merit to obtain the palm of martyrdom for the redemption of faithful captives and the preaching of the Christian faith.

 

10.  At Jerusalem, Saints Nicholas Tavelic, Deodatus Aribert, Stephen of Cuneo, and Peter of Narbonne, priests of the Order of Minors and martyrs, who, openly preaching the Christian religion before the Saracens in the public forum and steadfastly confessing Christ the Son of God, were burned with fire.

 

11.  At Caccamo in Sicily, blessed John Liccio, priest of the Order of Preachers, who, remarkable for tireless charity toward his neighbor, for spreading the prayer of the Rosary, and for zeal in regular discipline, rested in the Lord at the age of one hundred and eleven years.

Saint Albert, called “the Great,” bishop and Doctor of the Church, who, at Paris, having entered the Order of Preachers, taught philosophical and divine doctrines by word and by writings; master of Saint Thomas Aquinas, wonderfully uniting the wisdom of the saints with human and natural knowledge; afterward, unwillingly he received the see of Regensburg, striving constantly to establish peace among peoples, but after a year he preferred the poverty of the Order to every honor, and at Cologne in Lorraine in Germany he peacefully fell asleep.

 

2.  At Hippo Regius in Numidia, the twenty holy martyrs, whose faith and victory Saint Augustine celebrated; of these only the names of Fidentian, bishop, Valerian, and Victoria are recorded.

 

3.  At Edessa in Osrhoene, the holy martyrs Gurias, ascetic, and Samonas, who, under Emperor Diocletian, after long and severe torments, were condemned to death by the Mysian governor and beheaded with the sword.

 

4.  At Nola in Campania, Saint Felix, whose pastoral care and honor adorn this city.

 

5.  In Brittany, Saint Malo, or Machutus, bishop of Aleth, who was born in Wales and is said to have died among the Santones.

9.  At Rheinau among the Swiss, Saint Fintan, who, born in Ireland, lived for a long time in a monastery and longer still enclosed in a cell near the church, for the love of God.

 

10.  In the monastery of Klosterneuburg in Austria, the deposition of Saint Leopold, margrave of that land, who, still living, was adorned with the surname “the Pious,” a promoter of peace, and a friend to the poor and to the clergy.

 

11.  At Reading in England, the blessed martyrs Hugh Faringdon, or Cook, abbot of the Order of Saint Benedict, John Eynon, and John Rugg, priests, who steadfastly resisted King Henry VIII when he claimed for himself the primacy of the Church; for which reason, accused of treason, they were hanged and quartered in front of the monastery.

 

12.  Likewise at Glastonbury in England, the blessed martyrs Richard Whiting, abbot, Roger James, and John Thorne, priests of the Order of Saint Benedict, who, falsely accused of treason or sacrilege, under the same king were led to the same punishments.

 

13.  At Ferrara in Emilia, blessed Lucy Broccadelli, religious, who, both in marriage and in the monastery of the Third Order of Saint Dominic, patiently bore many sufferings and vexations.

 

14.  At Nagasaki in Japan, blessed Caius of Korea, martyr, who, a catechist, was consigned to the fire for his confession of Christ.

 

15.  In the place called Caaró in Paraguay, the holy martyrs Roque González and Alfonso Rodríguez, priests of the Society of Jesus, who won to Christ abandoned indigenous peoples by founding villages called “reductions,” in which arts and social life were freely joined with Christian conduct; for this reason, by a man addicted to magical arts, they were deceitfully killed.

 

16.  At Rome, Saint Joseph Pignatelli, priest of the Society of Jesus, who labored greatly for the restoration of that Order when it was almost extinct, and, outstanding in charity, humility, and integrity of life, was always intent upon the greater glory of God.

 

17.  In the place of Mengo in Uganda, Saint Joseph Mkasa Balikuddembe, martyr, who, prefect of the royal court, after receiving baptism, won many youths to Christ and protected the pages of the court from the vices of King Mwanga; for this reason, at the age of twenty-five, he was ordered by the enraged king to be beheaded, the first victim of his persecution.

 

18.  At Savona in Liguria in Italy, blessed Mary of the Passion (Hélène de Chappotin de Neuville), virgin, who, captivated in the depths of her heart by the humility and simplicity of Saint Francis, founded the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, continually caring for the condition of women in the lands of mission.

 

19.  At Wadowice in Poland, Saint Raphael of Saint Joseph (Joseph) Kalinowski, priest, who, when the people rose up against the oppressor, was captured by the enemy in war and deported to Siberia, where he endured many hardships; finally restored to freedom, he entered the Order of Discalced Carmelites, which he greatly promoted.

 

 


 

November 16th

 

This Day, the Sixteenth Day of November

Saint Margaret, who, born in Hungary and married to King Malcolm III of Scotland, bore eight children, and was greatly concerned for the good of the kingdom and of the Church, joining prayer and fasting to generosity toward the poor, thus giving an example of the best of wives, mothers, and queens.

 

Saint Gertrude, called “the Great,” virgin, who, from childhood devoted with the greatest fervor and energy to solitude and the study of letters, having been wholly turned toward God, entered the Cistercian monastery of Helfta near Eisleben in Saxony, Germany, where in a wondrous manner she hastened along the way of perfection, devoting herself to prayers and to the contemplation of Christ crucified.  Her passing occurred on the day after this day.

 

3.  At Capua in Campania, Saints Augustine and Felicitas, martyrs, who are said to have suffered under Emperor Decius.

 

4.  At Déols in the territory of Bourges in France, the commemoration of Saints Leocadius and Lusorius, of whom the former, a senator of Gaul still a pagan, welcomed the first heralds of the Christian faith among the Bituriges and made his house in this village into a church; the latter, his son, is said to have departed from the world clothed in the white garments of a neophyte.

 

5.  Likewise at Lyon in France, Saint Eucherius, who, from senatorial rank, together with his family, first withdrew to the neighboring island of Lérins to live an ascetic life; then, having been elected bishop of Lyon, wrote very many accounts of the passions of the holy martyrs.

 

6.  Among the Swiss, Saint Othmar, abbot, who, at the site of the cell founded by Saint Gall, established a small hospital for lepers and a monastery under the observance of the Rule of Saint Benedict; on account of defending its rights, he was soon deported by neighboring powers into exile on an island of the Rhine, where he died.

 

7.  In the monastery of Cava in Campania, blessed Simeon, abbot.

 

8.  At Provins, a town of Sens in France, the passing of Saint Edmund Rich, bishop of Canterbury, who, having been afflicted with exile for the defense of the Church, died while living a holy life among the Cistercian monks at Pontigny.

 

9.  At Assisi in Umbria, at Saint Damian’s, Saint Agnes, virgin, who, following her sister Saint Clare in the flower of youth, under the guidance of Saint Francis embraced poverty with her whole heart.

 

10.  At York in England, blessed Edward Osbaldeston, priest and martyr, of Lancashire, alumnus of the English College at Reims, who, under Queen Elizabeth I, was condemned to death for his priestly office, and underwent martyrdom by being hanged, drawn, and quartered.

This Day, the Seventeenth Day of November

Memorial of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, who, while still a young girl, was married to Louis, Count of Thuringia, to whom she bore three children; having become a widow, after having bravely endured great hardships, and already long intent on the meditation of heavenly things, she withdrew to the hospital in Marburg, Germany, which she had founded, embracing poverty and devoting herself to the care of the sick and the poor until her very last breath, died in the twenty-fifth year of her age.

 

2.  At Neocaesarea in Pontus, Saint Gregory, bishop, who, as a young man, embraced the Christian faith, and, having advanced both in human and divine knowledge, was ordained bishop, renowned for his teaching, virtues, and apostolic labors, and, on account of the many signs wrought by him, was called Thaumaturgus [Wonder-worker].

 

3.  At Caesarea in Palestine, the holy martyrs Alphaeus and Zacchaeus, who, in the first year of the persecution by the emperor Diocletian, when they had firmly confessed that God alone and Christ Jesus was king, after many torments, underwent the sentence of death.

 

4.  At Cordova in Hispania Baetica, Saint Acisclus, martyr.

 

5.  At Orléans in Gallia Lugdunensis, Saint Aignan, bishop, who, trusting in God alone, whose help he frequently obtained by prayers and tears, delivered his city from a siege by the Huns.

 

6.  At Vienne in Burgundy, Saint Namatius, bishop, who both discharged civil duties rightly and held and adorned the episcopal see.

 

7.  At Tours in Neustria, Saint Gregory, bishop, who succeeded Saint Euphronius in this see and composed the history of the Franks in truthful and simple style.

 

8.  At Whitby in Northumbria, Saint Hilda, abbess, who received the faith and sacraments of Christ, and, placed in charge of a monastery, so greatly applied herself to the instruction of monks and nuns in the regular life, to the preservation of peace and charity, to labor, and to the reading of the divine Scriptures, that she was considered to have accomplished heavenly works upon earth.

 

9.  At Ramosch in Rhaetia, Saint Florinus, priest, devoted with fidelity to the care of his parish.

 

10.  At Constantinople, Saint Lazarus, monk, who, born in Armenia, was distinguished for his art as a painter of sacred images; when he refused to destroy his works, he was, by order of the iconoclast emperor Theophilus, cruelly tortured; soon afterward, however, the controversy concerning the proper veneration of icons being settled, he was sent by the emperor Michael III to Rome to strengthen the concord and unity of the whole Church.

 

11.  At Nocera in Sicily, Saint Hugh, abbot, who, sent by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, established the Cistercian Order there and in Calabria.

 

12.  At Lincoln in England, Saint Hugh, bishop, who, having been called from being a Carthusian monk to this episcopal see, gave outstanding service both in defending the liberties of the Church and in rescuing Jews from the hands of their enemies.

 

13.  At Kraków in Poland, blessed Salome, who, Queen of Halicz, after the death of her husband King Coloman, professed the Rule of the Poor Clares and fulfilled with holiness the office of abbess in the monastery founded by herself.

 

14.  At Helfta near Eisleben in Saxony, the birthday of Saint Gertrude, virgin, whose memorial is given on the preceding day.

 

15.  At Asunción in Paraguay, Saint John del Castillo, priest of the Society of Jesus and martyr, who, in a village called a “reduction,” founded that same year by Saint Roch Gonzalez and committed to his care, by order of a man addicted to magical arts, was subjected to cruel torments and pelted with stones, and died for Christ. *

 

16.  At Nagasaki in Japan, the holy martyrs Jordan (Hyacinth) Ansalone and Thomas Hioji Rokuzayemon Nishi, priests of the Order of Preachers, of whom the former first labored much for the Gospel in the Philippine Islands and then in Japan, the latter in the island of Formosa and, in his final years, in his own country, where in the region of Nagasaki he was diligent in propagating the faith, until both, with unconquered spirit, under the supreme leader Tokugawa Iemitsu, were tortured for seven days in the gallows and pit, and died.

 

17.  On the reefs of the bridge at Rochefort in France, blessed Loup-Sebastien Hunot, priest of Sens and martyr, who, in the time of the French upheaval, on account of the priesthood, was confined in a plague-ship anchored in the open sea, and, enduring all the hardships of captivity, was finally overcome by fever and completed his martyrdom.

 

18 In the city of Kapayivka in the district of Kiev, Ukraine, blessed Josaphat Kocylovskyj, bishop of Przemyśl and martyr, who, when the rule of his homeland was hostile toward God, gave up his soul as a faithful disciple of Christ.

This Day, the Eighteenth Day of November

Dedication of the Basilicas of Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles, of which the former, built by the Emperor Constantine on the Vatican Hill over the tomb of Saint Peter, having collapsed through age, was restored in a larger form, and on this same recurring day was again consecrated; but the latter, on the Ostian Way, built by the Emperors Theodosius and Valentinian, afterwards consumed by a wretched fire and entirely rebuilt, was dedicated on the tenth day of December.  By their common commemoration, the brotherhood of the Apostles and the unity of the Church are in some way signified.

 

2.  At Antioch in Syria, Saint Romanus, martyr, who, a deacon of the Church of Caesarea, when in the persecution of the Emperor Diocletian he saw Christians obeying the norms of the decrees and hastening to the images of idols, and had called them with a free voice to resist, after dreadful tortures and the cutting out of his tongue, was strangled in prison with a rope, and was crowned with a celebrated martyrdom.

 

3.  At Columbarium in the district of Bourges in Aquitaine, Saint Patroclus, priest, who was a hermit and missionary.

 

4.  In Brittany, Saint Maudetus, abbot, who led a monastic life on a deserted island and, as a master of spiritual life, gathered many saints into the number of his disciples.

 

5.  At Coutances in Neustria, Saint Romacharius, bishop.

 

6.  In the Velay district of Aquitaine, Saint Theofredus, abbot and martyr.

Memorial of the Presentation of the blessed Virgin Mary.

On the day after the dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary the New, built near the wall of the Temple at Jerusalem, is celebrated that dedication which the future Mother of God made of herself to God from her infancy, moved by the Holy Spirit, with whose grace she had been filled in her Immaculate Conception.

 

2.  Commemoration of Saint Rufus, whom blessed Paul the Apostle, writing to the Romans, says was chosen by the Lord.

 

3.  At Poreč in Istria, Saint Maurus, bishop and martyr.

 

4.  At Caesarea in Palestine, Saint Agapius, martyr, who, already more than once tortured, but always deferring to greater contests, during the games in the amphitheater before Maximin himself, was given over to be devoured by a bear, and, while he was still breathing, on the following day, with stones tied to his feet, was plunged into the sea.

 

5.  At Rome, near Saint Peter’s, Saint Gelasius the First, pope, who, remarkable for doctrine and holiness, lest the imperial authority harm the unity of the Church, was the first to set forth clearly the distinct properties and mutual liberty of the two powers; moved with the greatest charity and by the needs of the poor, in order to help the needy, he died in extreme poverty.

Memorial of Saint Cecilia, virgin and martyr, who is said to have attained that twofold palm at Rome in the cemetery of Callistus on the Appian Way for the love of Christ, and whose name from ancient times has been given to the title-church in Trastevere.

 

2.  Commemoration of Saint Philemon of Colossae, in whose love for Christ Jesus blessed Paul the Apostle rejoiced, and who is venerated together with Saint Apphia, his wife.

 

3.  At Arbela in Persia, Saint Ananias, martyr, who, in the time of the persecution of King Shapur the Second, by order of Ardisag the high magus, was arrested and beaten with cudgels with such great severity three times that the executioners, thinking him already dead, left him lying in the street; but on the following night he was carried by Christians to his own home, where he breathed his last.

 

4.  At Milan in Liguria, Saint Benignus, bishop, who, in the great turmoil of invasions, governed with the greatest constancy and piety the Church committed to him.

 

5.  At Autun in Lugdunensian Gaul, Saint Pragmatius, bishop.

 

6.  By the river Zihun near the city of Marash in Cilicia, the blessed Salvator Lilli, priest of the Order of Friars Minor, John son of Balzi, and six other companions of Armenian race,3 martyrs, who, commanded by Ottoman soldiers to deny Christ, when they refused to betray their faith, were pierced with lances and departed to the eternal kingdom.

 

7.  In the village of Triora in Liguria in the region of Italy, blessed Thomas Reggio, bishop of Genoa, who, joining to austerity of life a marvelous gentleness of manner, brought about civil concord and in every way assisted the poor, chiefly taking care for the relief of human distress.

 

8.  In the city of Teocaltiche in Mexico, Saint Peter Esqueda Ramírez, priest and martyr, who, in the Mexican persecution, was thrown into prison on account of the priesthood, and was at last slain by bullets.

 

9.  In the city of Paterna in the district of Valencia in Spain, the blessed Elías (Julián) Torrijo Sánchez and Bertrán (Francisco) Lahoz Moliner, religious of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and martyrs, who, supported by the example of Christ, in the religious persecution merited to obtain the eternal reward promised to those who persevere.

Saint Clement the First, pope, martyr, who, the third after blessed Peter the Apostle, governed the Roman Church and wrote to the Corinthians a remarkable letter for the strengthening of peace and concord among them.  On this day the deposition of his body is celebrated at Rome.

 

Saint Columban, abbot, who, an Irishman by birth, becoming a pilgrim for Christ to teach the peoples of Gaul in the Gospel, founded Luxeuil along with many other monasteries, which he himself governed with strict discipline; then, forced into exile, he crossed the Alps and founded the monastery of Bobbio in Liguria, celebrated for discipline and studies, where, having greatly merited of the Church, he died in peace, and on this day his body was laid to rest.

 

3.  At Rome in the cemetery of Maximus on the New Salarian Way, Saint Felicity, martyr.

 

4.  At Chiusi in Etruria, Saint Mustiola, martyr.

 

5.  At Cyzicus in the Hellespont, Saint Sisinnius, bishop and martyr, who, in the persecution of the emperor Diocletian, after many torments, is said to have been slain by the sword.

 

6.  At Metz in Gallia Belgica, the commemoration of Saint Clement, who is held to have been the first bishop of that city.

 

7.  At Mérida in Lusitania, Saint Lucretia, martyr.

12.   At Alba Pompeia in the Subalpine region, blessed Margaret of Savoy, who, becoming a widow, gave herself to God in the monastery of nuns of the Order of Preachers, which she herself had founded.

 

13.  At Seoul in Korea, Saint Cecilia Yu So-sa, martyr, who, a widow, stripped of her goods for the faith and cast into prison, was interrogated twelve times under questioning and so afflicted with the punishment of beatings that, nearly eighty years old, she died in prison.

 

14.  In the village of Guadalupe in the territory of Zacatecas in Mexico, blessed Miguel Agustín Pro, priest of the Society of Jesus and martyr, who, during the persecution against the Church, condemned to death without trial as an accomplice in a crime, fulfilled the martyrdom which was his burning desire.

 

15.  At Madrid in Spain, blessed Maria Cecilia (Maria Felicidad) Cendoya y Araquistain, virgin of the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary and martyr, who, in the great persecution, when her sisters had been arrested, voluntarily surrendered herself the same night to the soldiers, and together with her companions confirmed the witness of the faith by the supreme sacrifice.

Memorial of Saints Andrew Dũng-Lạc, priest, and companions,4 martyrsBy a common celebration, one hundred and seventeen martyrs are honored in the regions of Tonkin, Annam, and Cochin China [Vietnam] in Asia, among whom were eight bishops, very many priests, and a vast multitude of lay Christian faithful of both sexes and of every condition and age, all of whom preferred to suffer exiles, prisons, tortures, and finally the most extreme punishments rather than to trample on the cross and fall away from the Christian faith.

 

2.  At Aquileia in Venetia, the commemoration of Saint Chrysogonus, martyr, who at Rome is celebrated on the anniversary day of the dedication of the church with the title of his name.

 

3.  At Amelia in Umbria, Saint Firmina, martyr.

 

4.  At Milan in Liguria, Saint Protasius, bishop, who defended the cause of Saint Athanasius before the emperor Constans and sat in the Council of Sardica.

 

5.  At Blaye in the territory of Bordeaux in Aquitaine, Saint Romanus, priest.

This Day, the Twenty-fifth Day of November

Saint Catherine, who is said to have been a virgin of Alexandria and a martyr, filled not less with sharpness of intellect and wisdom than with strength of spirit. Her body is venerated with pious devotion in the celebrated monastery on Mount Sinai.

 

2.  At Caesarea in Cappadocia, Saint Mercury, martyr.

 

3.  At Rome, the commemoration of Saint Moses, priest and martyr, who, after Saint Fabian the pope had been killed under the emperor Decius, together with the college of presbyters took care of the brethren in the Church; he judged that peace should be granted to the lapsed, the weak, and those at the point of death, and, having been kept for a long time in prison, often consoled them through the letters of Saint Cyprian of Carthage, and was crowned with an extraordinary and admirable martyrdom.

 

4.  At Alexandria in Egypt, Saint Peter, bishop and martyr, who, adorned with every virtue, was suddenly, by order of the emperor Galerius Maximian, beheaded, and became the last victim of the great persecution and the seal of the martyrs.  With him are commemorated three Egyptian bishops, namely Hesychius, Pachomius, and Theodorus, with many others, who likewise at Alexandria, in the same persecution, suffered, and were carried to heaven by the cruel sword.

 

5.  In Numidia, Saint Marculus, bishop, who, as it is said, in the time of the emperor Constans, was hurled from a rock by a certain Macarius and died as a martyr.

 

6.  In the territory of Agen in Aquitaine, Saint Maurinus, martyr, who, devoted to preaching the Gospel to the rural people, is said to have been slain by pagans.

 

7.  In the district of Valencia in Gaul, blessed Beatrice of Ornacieux, virgin of the Carthusian Order, who, distinguished by her love of the Cross, lived and died in extreme poverty in the monastery of Eymeu, which she had founded.

 

8.  At Reute in Swabia, blessed Elizabeth Achler, called “the Good,” virgin, who, living as if enclosed in the Third Order Regular of Saint Francis, wonderfully practiced humility, poverty, and bodily affliction.

 

9.  At Seoul in Korea, Saint Peter Yi Ho-yang, martyr, who, a catechist, together with his sister Saint Agatha Yi So-sa, having been captured by soldiers, and remaining firm in the confession of the faith, after his bones had been broken three times, was held in prison for four years, where he was the first to die of the glorious band of martyrs of this nation.

 

10.  In the village of Puebla de Hijar near Teruel in Spain, blessed Hyacinth Serrano López, priest of the Order of Preachers and martyr, who, in the persecution against the Church, was pierced with bullets.  With him is commemorated blessed James Meseguer Burillo, martyr, priest of the same Order, who at Barcelona, on an unknown day, accomplished an outstanding contest for Christ.

1.  At Rome in the cemetery of Priscilla on the New Salarian Way, Saint Siricius, pope, whom Saint Ambrose rightly praises as a true teacher, inasmuch as, bearing the burdens of all the bishops, he taught them the precepts of the Fathers, which he also confirmed with apostolic authority.

 

2.  At Hadrianopolis in Paphlagonia, Saint Alypius, deacon and stylite, who died nearly a hundred years old.

 

3.  At Constance in Swabia of Germany, Saint Conrad, bishop, who, an excellent shepherd of his flock, generously provided from his own means for the Church and for the poor.

 

4.  At Lacedaemon in the Peloponnesus, Saint Nikon, monk, who, after living the cenobitic and eremitical life in Asia, devoted himself, after the island of Crete was freed from the yoke of the Saracens, to restoring Christians to their morals with evangelical zeal; then, traveling through Greece preaching penance, he died in the Spartan monastery which he had founded.

 

5.  In a forest near Fratta in the territory of Rovigo in Venetia, the passion of Saint Bellinus, bishop of Padua and martyr, who, an extraordinary defender of the Church, cruelly set upon by assassins, fell after receiving many wounds.

 

6.  In the monastery of Canons Regular of Sées in Savoy, blessed Pontius of Faucigny, who, formerly abbot of Abondance, having laid down the office, wished to die as a simple religious.

 

7.  At Fabriano in Piceno of Italy, Saint Sylvester Gozzolini, abbot, who, when before the open tomb of a friend who had died shortly before, he understood all the vanity of the world, withdrew into the desert, and, having changed his dwelling places various times to be more hidden from men, finally in the wilderness near Montefano laid the foundations of the Congregation of the Sylvestrines, under the Rule of Saint Benedict.

 

8.  At Apt in Provence, blessed Delphina, wife of Saint Elzear of Sabran, with whom she had vowed that they would both remain chaste, and after whose death she remained in poverty and prayer.

 

9.  At York in England, the blessed martyrs Hugh Taylor, priest, and Marmaduke Bowes, the former, a young man, because he had gone to England as a priest, the latter, an old man, because he had assisted the same priest, under Queen Elizabeth the First were given over to the punishment of the gallows.

 

10.  At Bisignano in Calabria, Saint Humilis (Luke Anthony) Pirozzo, religious of the Order of Friars Minor, renowned for the spirit of prophecy and for the frequency of ecstasies.

 

11.  At Rome in the convent of Saint Bonaventure on the Palatine, Saint Leonard of Port Maurice, priest of the Order of Friars Minor, who, filled with zeal for souls, devoted nearly his whole life to preaching, to publishing pious books, and to visiting more than three hundred missions in the City, in the island of Corsica, and throughout northern Italy.

 

12.  In the city of Nam Định in Tonkin [Vietnam], the holy martyrs Thomas Đinh Viết Dụ and Dominic Nguyễn Văn (Đoàn) Xuyên, priests of the Order of Preachers, who, by decree of the emperor Minh Mang, were beheaded together.

 

13.  At Bassano near Vicenza in Italy, blessed Caietana Sterni, religious, who, left a widow while still young, gave herself entirely to the service of the poor and founded the Congregation of the Sisters of the Divine Will, to minister to the poor and the sick.

 

14.  At Rome, blessed James Alberione, priest, who, greatly concerned for evangelization, strove with every effort and endeavor to direct the instruments of social communication to the good of human society and to make them means that would more effectively proclaim the truth of Christ; for this reason, he founded the Congregation of the Priests of the Society of Saint Paul the Apostle.

1.  By the River Cea in Galicia, the holy martyrs Facundus and Primitivus.

 

2.  At Grumento in Lucania, Saint Lavarius, martyr.

 

3.  At Aquileia in Venetia, Saint Valerian, bishop, who defended the orthodox faith in Illyricum against the Arians and gathered clergy and laity to live a common life.

 

4.  In Persia, Saint James, surnamed “the Dismembered,” martyr, who, in the time of the emperor Theodosius the Younger, having denied Christ in service to King Yazdegerd, was bitterly rebuked by his mother and wife; whereupon he returned to himself and fearlessly confessed himself to be a Christian before Vararanes, son and successor of Yazdegerd. Therefore, by order of the angry king, sentence of death having been passed upon him, he was commanded to be cut limb from limb and beheaded.

 

5.  At Riez in Provence, Saint Maximus, after Saint Honoratus the father of the monastery of Lérins, and soon after bishop of the Church of Riez.

 

6.  In the district of Blois in Gaul, Saint Eusicius, hermit, who built for himself a little cell at the foot of Mount Cari.

 

7.  At Carpentras in Provence, Saint Siffred, bishop.

 

8.  At Noyon in Gaul, Saint Achar, bishop, who, from being a monk of Luxeuil, having been elected to the Church of Noyon and Tournai, devoted himself to the evangelization of the peoples of the northern regions.

 

9.  At Mainz in Rhenish Austrasia, Saint Bilhildis, virgin, who built a monastery in which she piously died.

 

10.  In Scotland, Saint Fergus, bishop, who is said to have exercised his office among the Picts.

 

11.  At Salzburg in Bavaria, Saint Virgilius, bishop, a man of great learning, Irish by nation, who, with the favor of King Pepin, was placed over the Church of Salzburg; there he built a cathedral church in honor of Saint Rupert and worked successfully to spread the faith among the Carantanians.

 

12.  At Belle-Île on the coast of Gaul in the district of Nantes in Brittany, Saint Gulstan, monk, who, as a youth having escaped from the hands of pirates and been received by Saint Felix, then a hermit in the monastery of Rhuys, though illiterate, became renowned for reciting the psalter by heart and for aiding sailors.

 

13.  At L’Aquila in the Abruzzi of Italy, blessed Bernardine of Fossa (John) Amici, priest of the Order of Minors, who spread the Catholic faith through many provinces of Italy.

 

14.  At Nagasaki in Japan, the blessed Thomas Koteda Kiuni and ten companions, martyrs, who, out of hatred for the faith, by order of the governor Gonzuku, were beheaded.

 

15.  In the internment camp of Dachau near Munich in Bavaria, Germany, blessed Bronislaw Kostkowski, martyr, who, during the military occupation of Poland, afflicted with terrible torments in prison, attained the palm of martyrdom.

1.  At Sebaste in Armenia, Saint Irenarchus, martyr, who, being an executioner of punishment, was converted to Christ by the constancy of Christian women, and is said to have been beheaded under the emperor Diocletian and the governor Maximus.

 

2.  In Africa, the commemoration of the holy martyrs Papinian of Vita and Mansuetus of Urusi, bishops, who, in the time of the Vandal persecution, under King Genseric the Arian, for the defense of the Catholic faith, having been burned over their whole body with heated plates of iron, completed their glorious contest.  At which time also other holy bishops — namely Urban of Girba, Crescens of Byzacena, Habetdeus of Teudalis, Eustratius of Sufetula, Cresconius of Oea, Vicis of Sabratha, Felix of Hadrumetum, and afterwards, under Hunneric, son of Genseric, Hortulanus of Bennefa and Florentian of Midila — having been sent into exile, fulfilled the course of their life in the confession of the faith.

 

3.  At Constantinople, Saint Stephen the Younger, monk and martyr, who, under the emperor Constantine Copronymus, for the veneration of holy Images, having been tortured with various punishments, confirmed the Catholic truth by the shedding of his blood.

 

4.  Near Rossano in Calabria, Saint Theodora, abbess, disciple of Saint Nilus the Younger and teacher of the monastic life.

 

5.  At Naples in Campania, the deposition of Saint James of the Marches (James of Piceno), priest of the Order of Minors, renowned for his preaching and austerity of life.

 

6.  At York in England, blessed James Thomson, priest and martyr, who, under Queen Elizabeth the First, condemned to death because he had reconciled very many to the Catholic Church, was handed over to the punishment of the gallows.

 

7.  In the district of Khám Đường in Annam [Vietnam], Saint Andrew Trấn Văn Trông, martyr, who, because he refused to trample on the cross, after prison and cruel tortures, was beheaded under the emperor Minh Mạng.

 

8.  In the place Paracuellos del Jarama near Madrid in Spain, the blessed John of Jesus (Mariano) Adradas Gonzalo, priest, and fourteen companions,7 martyrs, who, religious of the Order of Saint John of God, in the time of persecution were crowned with illustrious passion.

 

9.  In the village of Picadero de Paterna in the district of Valencia likewise in Spain, blessed Aloysius Campos Górriz, martyr, who, in the same religious persecution, crowned with glorious death a life joyfully devoted to works of apostolate and charity.

 

 


 

November 29th

 

This Day, the Twenty-ninth Day of November

1.  At Rome, in the cemetery of Thrason on the New Salarian Way, Saint Saturninus of Carthage, martyr, who, according to Pope Saint Damasus, under the emperor Decius was placed on the rack in his native land for the sake of Christ, and then sent into exile to Rome. There, after enduring and overcoming further cruel torments, he converted the tyrant Gratian to the faith, and, having been beheaded, received the crown of martyrdom.

 

2.  At Toulouse in Narbonnensian Gaul, the commemoration of Saint Saturninus, bishop and martyr, who, as it is said, in the time of the same Decius, was seized by pagans in the Capitol of this city and thrown from the top of the citadel down the steps, so that, with his head dashed and his whole body torn, he gave back his soul to Christ.

 

3.  At Ancyra in Galatia, Saint Philomenus, martyr, who, in the persecution of the emperor Aurelian, under the governor Felix, having been thrown into the fire, and then with his hands, feet, and head fixed with nails, is said to have completed his martyrdom.

 

4.  At Todi in Umbria, Saint Illuminata, virgin.

 

5.  At Batnae likewise in Osrhoene, Saint James, bishop of Sarug, who, by sermons, homilies, and verses, enlightened this Church with the purest faith, and is venerated among the Syrians with Saint Ephrem as a doctor and pillar of the Church.

 

6.  At Deventer in Frisia, the translation of Saint Radbod, bishop of Utrecht, who, a learned and prudent shepherd, died while visiting the countryside.

 

7.  At York in England, blessed Edward Burden, priest and martyr, who, having completed his studies at the English College at Reims and having been ordained priest, returned to the dominions of Queen Elizabeth the First, and on the gallows before a raging crowd completed his passion.

 

8.  In the same place, eight years later, the blessed martyrs George Errington, William Gibson, and William Knight, who, because they had defended priests proscribed for that very fact, were given over to martyrdom after various tortures.

 

9.  In Aceh on the island of Sumatra, the blessed martyrs Denis of the Nativity (Peter Berthelot), priest, and Redemptus of the Cross (Thomas Rodriguez), religious, of the Order of Discalced Carmelites, who, first reduced to slavery by the Muslims, were at length on the seashore killed with arrows and the sword.

 

10.  At Lucera in Apulia, Saint Francis Anthony Fasani, priest of the Order of Conventual Friars Minor, who, a man of exquisite learning, greatly supported by zeal for preaching and penance, cared for the poor and needy so much that he never hesitated to take off his own garment to clothe a beggar, and offered Christian help to all.

 

11.  In the place called El Saler near Valencia in Spain, blessed Alfred Simon Colomina, priest of the Society of Jesus and martyr, who, in the persecution against the Church, confirmed his fidelity to the Lord with his blood.

 

 


 

 

November 30th

 

This Day, the Thirtieth Day of November

Feast of Saint Andrew, Apostle, who, born at Bethsaida, the brother of Simon Peter and with him a fisherman, was the first of the disciples of John the Baptist to be called by the Lord Jesus at the Jordan.  He followed Him and even brought his brother to Him.  After Pentecost, he is said to have preached the Gospel in Achaia and at Patras to have been affixed to the cross. The Church of Constantinople holds him in special honor as a most eminent patron.

 

2.  At Milan in Liguria, Saint Mirocles, bishop, whom Saint Ambrose mentions among his faithful predecessors in the episcopate.

 

3.  In Brittany, Saint Tugdual, surnamed Pabu, abbot and bishop, who founded a monastery in the region of Trégor.

 

4.  At Mount Siepi in Etruria, Saint Galganus Guidotti, hermit, who, after a dissipated youth, converted to God and spent the rest of his life in voluntary bodily penance.

 

5.  At Montpellier in Provence of Gaul, blessed John of Vercelli Garbella, priest, who, as Master General of the Order of Preachers, earnestly preached reverence for the name of Jesus.

 

6.  At Regensburg in Bavaria of Germany, blessed Frederick, religious of the Order of Hermits of Saint Augustine, who, a skilled carpenter, excelled in fervor for prayer, obedience, and charity.

 

7.  At St. Stephen-in-the-Fields in England, Saint Cuthbert Mayne, priest and martyr, who, having embraced the Catholic faith and been ordained priest, exercised his ministry in Cornwall until, under Queen Elizabeth the First, he was condemned to death because he had made Apostolic Letters public property, and was given over to the punishment of the gallows — the first of the alumni of the English College at Douai.

 

8.  At York likewise in England, blessed Alexander Crow, priest and martyr, who, from a humble shoemaker became a priest, and under the same queen, because of the priesthood, gloriously completed the course of his martyrdom on the gallows.

 

9.  In the place Quxian in the province of Sichuan in China, Saint Thaddeus Liu Ruiting, priest and martyr, who was strangled out of hatred for the faith.

 

10.  At Hué in Annam [Vietnam], Saint Joseph Marchand, priest of the Paris Foreign Mission Society and martyr, who, under the emperor Minh Mạng, was condemned to the punishment of one hundred blows.

 

11.  In the place Paracuellos del Jarama near Madrid in Spain, the blessed Michael Ruedas Megías and six companions,8 martyrs, religious of the Order of Saint John of God, outstanding in the confession of Christ, who, renowned for their confession [of faith], while the persecution was raging, by the violence of the enemies of the Church departed to the Lord

 

12.  Likewise at Valencia in Spain, blessed Joseph Otin Aquile, priest of the Salesian Society and martyr, who, in the same time, undefeated in the constancy of faith, came to the heavenly kingdom.

 

13.  Near Munich in Bavaria of Germany, in the internment camp of Dachau, blessed Louis Roch Gientyngier, priest and martyr, who, during the occupation of Poland in the war, in crimes perpetrated by the regime hostile to the faith, afflicted with torments, gave up his spirit.
